Job Summary:

This position will be responsible for the resolution of high complexity and high exposure claims. The position will have increased responsibility for decision making within their authority and work with minimal oversight.

Responsibilities:

  • Investigate, evaluate, negotiate and resolve complex medical malpractice, specified medical, and longtern care claims.

  • Exercise initiative, judgment and decision-making skills in the management of a complex caseload.

  • Maintain and adhere to Markel's guidelines and procedures.

  • Ensure proper adherence to internal large loss reporting requirements.

  • Promptly communicate with Claims Manager on adverse case developments and provide information on pertinent issues affecting the medical malpractice and specified medical business.

  • Contribute and assist in the implementation of a wide range of initiatives, discussion and action plans brought forth by the Claims Manager.

  • Communicate with underwriting as needed to manage claims and to alert of any significant developments.

  • Manage any TPA relationships to include reporting responsibilities.

  • Participate in agent related functions and meetings as required.

  • Actively participate in the ongoing training and development of the claims examiners as indicated by Claims Manager.

Requirements:

  • 5-10+ years of medical malpractice claims or litigation experience required.

  • College degree and/or professional designation required, JD preferred.

  • Sound comprehension of coverage provided by medical malpractice and general liability covers.

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.

  • Experience in determining contractual obligations, coverage analyses, and investigations.

  • Ability to balance working both independently and collaboratively depending on the circumstances.

  • Ability to manage complex litigation, to set loss and expense reserves and to develop strategies for resolution.

  • Ability to proactively self-manage a high caseload.

  • Ability to analyze and convey summations of complex issues; recognize alternative approaches and develop action plans, both orally and in written

  • Travel required as necessary (approximately 20%).

Job Responsibilities * Confirms coverage of claims by reviewing policies and documents submitted in support of claims * Analyzes coverage and communicates coverage positions * Conducts, coordinates, and directs investigation into loss facts and extent of damages * Directs and monitors assignments to experts and outside counsel * Evaluates information on coverage, liability, and damages to determine the extent of insured's exposure * Sets reserves within authority or makes claim recommendations concerning reserve changes to manager * Negotiates and settles claims either directly or indirectly * Prepares reports by collecting and summarizing information * Adheres to Fair Claims Practices regulations and internal Claims Quality Performance Objectives * Participates in special projects or assists other team members as requested * Travel to mediations, trials, and conferences as required Education * Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience * JD, advanced degree, or focused technical degree a plus Certification * Must have or be eligible to receive claims adjuster license. * Successful achievement of industry designations (INS, IEA, AIC, ARM, SCLA, CPCU) or * Participation in industry training opportunities (CLM Claim College, Munich Re Training, FDCC, etc.) Work Experience * Minimum of 5 years of claims handling experience or equivalent combination of education and experience Skill Sets * Ability to examine policy and contract language and provide well-reasoned analysis * Excellent written and oral communication skills * Strong analytical and problem solving skills * Strong organization and time management skills * Ability to deliver outstanding customer service * Intermediate skills in Microsoft Office products (Excel, Outlook, Power Point, Word) * Ability to work in a team environment * Strong desire for continuous improvement "Why work for us?"
