JOB SUMMARY: The Senior Career Guide Court Schools Post-Secondary will be part of a new team at ACOE building college and career programming for high school graduates detained in Alameda County juvenile facilities.

The Senior Career Guide will assist incarcerated and formerly incarcerated youth as they transition back into the community. Career Guides will begin working with youth while they are still incarcerated, approximately six months before release, and continue working with youth approximately 12 months post release. Career Guides will provide wraparound college and career support, including but not limited to, assisting with resume preparation and job applications, facilitating community college enrollment, and securing and navigating transportation to/from work/school.

Career Guides will receive extensive training on options for post-secondary programs and strategic choices young adults can make on a path toward living wage jobs and then provide intensive, ongoing one-on-one support to the students they support. Career Guides will keep detailed records and will write frequent progress reports to ensure the continued success of their students and the program. Career Guides will also do significant traveling, mostly within Alameda County, to assist students. Individuals who have been impacted by the juvenile justice system are encouraged to apply.

THE POSITION: The Senior Career Guide is responsible for illuminating career opportunities to youth and community members in Alameda County, supporting them as they navigate through entry steps, including enrolling in coursework, pre-apprenticeships, and apprenticeships and providing guidance to support sustained employment.

This position at Alameda County Office of Education (ACOE) represents a shift away from community members navigating career pipelines individually and seeks to make entry into careers a supported, collective, and positive experience. It is a part of our effort to dramatically improve counseling supports for the 60%+ students who do not attend 4-year college directly after high school, helping those young adults make strategic, career-oriented post-secondary choices that honor immediate financial pressures, long-term needs for stable, living wage careers, and their potential to develop into experts and leaders in essential careers in Alameda County. Career Guides support navigation through pipelines into the skilled trades, into the education sector, into behavioral and mental health careers, and may provide support for navigating pipelines across multiple industry sectors.

Career Guides will track the career progress of the youth and community members they serve over multiple years. This job reports to the assigned administrator. LOCATION: 2500 Fairmont Drive, San Leandro, CA 94578 TYPICAL DUTIES:

Assist young adults in applying and registering for a broad range of postsecondary training programs and jobs. Initiate, grow and maintain relationships with career and guidance staff in county, district, and charter operated and high schools and Regional Occupational Programs (ROPs). Initiate, grow and maintain relationships with leaders of career pipeline programs in your targeted fields including community colleges, apprenticeship, pre-apprenticeship, and internship programs. Design protocols for determining different levels of support available for students based on need.

Design and improve existing referral systems for targeted youth and community members. Assist Program Director in grant reporting and prospecting/writing new grants to support the program. Provide mentorship to Career Guides with less experience.

Assist Program Director with the development of employer, media, and other public facing communications about the Green Career Guidance Initiative. Serve as primary ACOE liaison with specified industry partners and post-secondary institutions as assigned. SEE FULL JOB DESCRIPTION FOR MORE INFORMATION MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:

BA or completion of 4+ year apprenticeship program associated with your targeted industry/field preferred. Experience: Five years of full-time related experience is required. This can be a combination of the following:

School counselor, Teacher, College / Career Specialist, Work-Based Learning Liaison, case manager, Career Guide or similar position in a school or in a nonprofit youth development organization and/or facilitating the learning of apprentices, interns, or other early career staff through any combination of related supplemental instruction, or through on the job training or mentoring. Equivalency: Equivalent combination of education and experience.
