DESCRIPTION

The Senior Career Development Specialist is responsible for the development and assessment of career planning programs for Marshall University students and providing career coaching services on an individual and group basis, using aptitude, personality, interest, and values inventories, online career resources, and career services management system (ex. Handshake). The Senior Career Development Specialist will also guide students in effective resume-building and interview skills and offer practical, hands-on networking and job searching techniques. This position will also present outreach programming and workshops to students in classroom settings, residence halls, and student organizations. The Senior Career Development Specialist is the liaison between the Office of Career Education, academic advising, new student programs, and faculty.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Counsel undecided (re: career direction) and undeclared (re: major) students individually and in groups. Administer assessment instruments and computerized career guidance systems as needed.

  • Counsel students on job search/preparation skills-resume writing, networking, and interviewing.

  • Serve as a facilitator/resource for the UNI 100 course and the New Student Orientation classes related to career planning.

  • Teach UNI 103 to assist undeclared students in selecting an appropriate major for their chosen career.

  • Collaborate with the Office of New Student Programs and First-Year Experience to teach prospective and new students how to access OCE programs and services.

  • Provide programming outreach with other units of the University, such as University College, HerdPath partners, FAM, EDGE, housing, and residence life, etc., to connect with students early in their academic career.

  • Present outreach programs and workshops to students in classroom settings, residence halls, and student organizations.

  • Train faculty advisors to recognize students' concerns related to career direction and choice of major and to make and follow up on referrals.

  • Interact with University College to ensure that undecided and undeclared students are provided relevant aptitude, career exploration, and/or counseling tests and inventories.

  • Assist with the training of graduate assistants in the OCE.

  • In coordination with OCE Director, establish targets, goals, & outcomes.

  • Collect and analyze data pertinent to coaching, teaching, and retention of students participating in targeted career planning programs and services for the annual report.

  • Co-develop and update electronic and paper (handouts/brochures) resources.

  • Expand services into individual colleges, especially those with lower retention rates, to assist in the retention goals for the university.

  • Develop and provide outreach to community partners such as high schools and non-profits to meet the goals of the university related to community outreach and recruitment.

  • Develop and provide career education resources and programming for special population retention: LGBTQ+, Veterans, Disability & Autism.

  • Use resources such as Handshake, PathwayU and SSC Navigate.

  • Serve on the university-wide committees as needed.

  • Provide case-management to incoming cohort of Marshall for All.

Career Exploration Experiences Duties

  • Communicate the benefits of creating a robust career exploration program that brings targeted students onsite and connects them with key HR contacts and hiring managers.

  • Actively engage with employers in multiple fields to develop and maintain sites for students to complete their experiences.

  • Create educational materials and present them to students who wish to complete a career exploration experience.

  • Evaluate student learning, career readiness, and employer satisfaction with the program and produce an annual report.

  • Help employers create quality career exploration experiences that meet the program's learning objectives.

  • Create a thorough understanding of the importance of career exploration learning to all constituents: students, parents, academic advisors, faculty, and employers.

  • Cultivate collaborative relationships with academic advisors, faculty, and staff across the University.

  • In conjunction with the Assistant Director for Employer & Student Relations and department chairs, cultivate relationships with alums to provide career exploration experiences.

  • In conjunction with the Assistant Director of Student Engagement & Marketing, develop marketing strategies to increase student participation in the program.

Salary Range $35,568 - $44,400 - Salary may be increased based off education, experience, and internal equity. Salary Type Salary Time Type Full-Time Work Location MU

Required Qualifications

Education

  • Master's degree in counseling, education, psychology, higher education administration, or related field.

Experience

  • Ability to effectively counsel college students in career planning and academic development required.

  • At least one year of experience in counseling, career services, or similar student-facing role.

  • Demonstrated ability to use assessment instruments and computerized career guidance systems.

  • Excellent counseling, communication, presentation, and organizational skills required.

Must be able to perform all essential job duties as outlined in the job description.

Preferred Qualifications

Education Experience

Two to three years of experience working with undecided college students preferred.
