Position Summary:

As a member of the Enterprise Data and Business Intelligence (EDBI) group, Enterprise Data and Business Intelligence is a unit of the Office of Institutional Effectiveness (OIE). The team is responsible for developing and maintaining Rice's data warehouse and supporting data management and business intelligence (BI) infrastructure environments. The group supports the institutional reporting infrastructure from all enterprise and most business function-specific systems.

We seek an experienced Senior Business Intelligence Developer to lead Data Warehouse and Business Intelligence initiatives. The ideal candidate will develop and enhance data-centric solutions using agile methodologies to support decision-making and strategic objectives. Responsibilities include designing, developing, and maintaining BI solutions, building storyboards, designing and developing dashboards, and using dashboards for storytelling to convey insights effectively. The role demands strong technical skills in data warehousing, ETL processes, and BI tools, along with experience in agile development environments.

Workplace Requirements:

This position is offered as a hybrid role, combining in-office and remote work to provide flexibility and support collaboration. Per Rice policy 440, work arrangement may be subject to change.

Hiring Range:

Expected minimum salary of $95,000, dependent on experience and qualifications.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor's Degree

  • In lieu of the education requirement, additional related experience, above and beyond what is required, on an equivalent year for year basis may be substituted

  • 3 or more years of related experience

  • In lieu of the experience requirement, additional related education, above and beyond what is required, on an equivalent year-for-year basis may be substituted

Skills:

  • Excellent programming, relational database skills including expertise knowledge of SQL and PL / SQL

  • Excellent shell programming skills and any object-oriented programming language

  • Mastery in business intelligence and data warehousing concepts and methodologies

  • Expert in data modeling and designing data warehouse from heterogenous OLTP sources

  • High proficiency in designing physical and reporting data models

  • Proficiency in designing complex ETL's extracting data through XML files, RDBMS and flat file sources

  • Expert level in databases, data acquisition, ETL strategies, tools and technologies

  • Mastery in reporting / analytics and data visualization tools

  • Proficiency in scripting language like Python, Shell, JavaScript, HTML5

  • Expert knowledge in multiple existing and next generation business intelligence tools

Preferences:

  • Master's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Business Administration, or a related field.

  • Extensive experience with higher education data systems and processes.

  • Familiarity with cloud-based data warehousing solutions (e.g., AWS Redshift, Google BigQuery, Microsoft Azure).

  • Experience with advanced data analytics and machine learning techniques.

  • Strong knowledge of data governance and data quality management practices.

  • Proven ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously in a complex and fast-paced environment.

  • Experience in driving digital transformation initiatives.

  • Demonstrated success in leading large-scale data integration projects.

  • Familiarity with data security and compliance regulations in the educational sector.

  • Excellent organizational and time-management skills.

  • Strong presentation skills, with the ability to communicate complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.

Essential Functions:

  • Leads the analysis, conceptualization, and design to implementation and development of complex and varied solutions for critical business intelligence (BI) components and data presentation in BI applications

  • Develops standards, definitions / codes conforming to global and reusable objects for complex database designs and data modeling for EDW and programming to streamline the systems

  • Consults with client groups to assess user needs and understand the business processes; converts user requirements into technical solutions and escalates any unusual issues to management

  • Collaborates closely with internal and external teams to understand and apply changes / modifications impacting data warehouse

  • Reviews and provides feedback for code walkthroughs and technical design

  • Performs and provides results in quality control testing

  • Creates and implements software methodologies

  • Monitors ETL processes, system audits, dashboard reporting and presentation layer functioning and performance

  • Oversees the release cycle process and ensures timely implementation of bug fixes, change requests and enhancements

  • May supervisor or mentor junior staff

  • Performs all other duties as assigned
