We are offering a $5000.00 sign-on bonus for the position of Senior Building Plans Examiner.

The purpose of this position is to perform a variety of highly advanced and complex professional and administrative work in the reviewing a combination of complex high-rise type 1 buildings, commercial and residential construction documents, and related issues for compliance with all federal, state, county, and local codes and regulations for the Building Department.

Position Scope:

This is a senior technical level position and Essential Personnel position.

This is not intended as a comprehensive list; it is intended to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities. Incumbent may be required to perform all duties listed, and may be required to perform additional, position-specific tasks.

  • Examines plans, blueprints, tracings, sketches, and specifications prior to issuance of building or proposed building construction.

  • Approves and/or disapproves proposed plans in accordance with codes and other regulatory requirements and discusses disapproved items with architects, engineers, contractors and/or owners and builders to obtain plan changes necessary for approval.

  • Interprets codes and ordinance requirements and assists other inspectors in preparing and presenting cases in court.

  • Reviews residential and commercial roofing plans to ensure compliance with building codes and other regulatory requirements.

  • Performs skilled inspections and enforcement and supervisory work in the examination, review, analysis, approval and/or disapproval of plans to ensure compliance with the Florida Building Code and other applicable codes and regulations as it relates to building and/or structural plans examining.

  • Performs systematic site inspections of skilled trades work for new and existing construction within the City to ensure compliance with all applicable city, county, state and federal codes and regulatory requirements in the building/structural trade.

  • Verifies compliance with approved building permits, plans, and specifications and reviews and approves work of completed projects.

  • Reads and interprets blueprints and specifications for construction plans and designs.

  • Collaborates with independent contractors and subcontractors, engineers, architects, homeowners, and internal administrative support to ensure all required documentation is completed and submitted for approval of requested permits and licenses.

  • Assists the Chief Building Inspector in the supervision of other building inspectors and serves as the Chief Building Inspector in his/her absence.

  • Identifies compliance problems and issues code violations; meets with violators and general public to explain and interpret applicable codes and advises violator of expected timeframe to correct infraction; and performs re-inspection to determine if corrections have been made to achieve compliance.

  • Communicates with Building Official on any structural problems, code issues, or regulatory requirements that have not been resolved.

  • Performs any other related job duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of an advanced professional nature in the Civil Engineering discipline with additional professional knowledge in other engineering professions.

  • Knowledge of personal computers and Microsoft Office programs.

  • Knowledge of construction management and CIP responsibilities and activities, equipment, and practices.

  • Knowledge of computer-aided design and computer-aided engineering programs.

  • Skill in advanced mathematics to conduct various stress, load-bearing, and financial computations.

  • Ability to prepare, review, and interpret engineering and construction plans and specifications.

  • Ability to analyze technical design engineer, construction engineering, and surveying problems.

  • Ability to read and understand design and construction-related drawings.

Minimum Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent. Associate's degree preferred.

  • Minimum of ten (10) years of experience as a licensed General Contractor, some of which shall have been within jurisdiction of the Florida Building Code.

  • Any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.

Licenses and/or Certifications:

  • Building Plans Examiner and Structural Building Inspector Certifications.

  • General Contractor's license.

  • Valid Florida driver's license.

Additional Information:

  • There is a one-year probationary period.

  • It is the responsibility of the incumbent to maintain their licenses and/or certifications as a job requirement.
