The City of Hayward is excited to announce its recruitment for the position of the Senior Building Inspector-Structural.

THE POSITION:

This position inspects plans or buildings and construction for compliance with structural building codes, laws and ordinances and provides training and working lead assistance to other inspectors on structural matters as required.

The mission of the Development Services Department is to help manage the future development of Hayward, in order to assure the economic and environmental health of the community and a high quality of life for its residents, protect the health and safety of the community through building inspection and enforcement of codes and standards, and provide new housing opportunities for the residents of the City.

You are:

The ideal candidate will have thorough knowledge of the California Building Codes, CalGreen Code and related codes and regulations, including the methods, materials, techniques and practices employed in building inspection industry. Additionally, the ideal candidate will have working knowledge of the principles and practices of organization, administration, the ability to manage complex projects through inspection skills; and organization and functions of the various trades, agencies and organizations involved in the construction process, in addition to being an outstanding person, who aspires to excellence in customer service and is a committed team player.What you will do: 

Duties may include but are not limited to the following

Performs skilled inspection work in enforcing compliance with the City's building, plumbing, electrical, mechanical and energy codes, and other related laws and state ordinances.

Assists the general public, contractors, architects, engineers and co-workers by interpreting and providing detailed explanations of requirements and applications of building, plumbing, mechanical and electrical codes and related state and local ordinances.

Routinely drives city vehicle to inspection sites to perform skilled inspection work in enforcing compliance with city structural codes and other related local and state ordinances.

Reviews building plans to verify compliance with local state and federal ordinances; approves or rejects plans and orders corrections to insure compliance.

Graphically details methods of construction and code requirements for the general public, contractors, architects and engineers.

Trains and provides lead assistance to building inspectors in the performance of their duties specifically when complex structural inspections are being conducted and technical advice is required.

Maintains appropriate records of inspections and recommendations on code requirements provided to the general public, contractors, architects and engineers.

Provides survey of Building Code requirements on structures where change in occupancy loads are planned; provides follow-up reports.

Meets with Building Official on a variety of matters related to structural inspection work.

Performs related duties as required.

  •  Building, housing, plumbing, mechanical and electrical codes with specialized knowledge of materials and standards to be applied in structural inspections.

  • Deal effectively, tactfully and professionally with co-workers, the general public, architects and engineers.

  • Read and interpret building plans and specifications and enforce their application.

  • Prepare clear and concise written reports.

  • Research and study building codes, laws and ordinances.

  • Perform moderate to heavy amounts of paper work.

  • Work independently with minimal or no supervision.

JOB RELATED AND ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS  You have:

Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying.  A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Experience: 

Four (4) years of experience dealing with code compliance considerations related to the structural elements of buildings.

OR

Two (2) years structural inspection experience involving major commercial or industrial installations.

Education:

Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade.                        

License: 

Possession of a Class C California Drivers License.

ICBO (International Conference of Building Officials) Certification as a structural and/or combination inspector is highly desirable, but not required.BENEFITS AND REWARDS:

The examination process will result in a ranked eligible register of candidates for hiring consideration by the department derived from any of the exam processes mentioned above.

Department Interviews

  • Actual hire depends on success in the departmental selection process.

Candidates under final consideration for employment with the City should expect to undergo an employment background/reference check that may include, but is not limited to: employment history verification, medical evaluation, confirmation of educational credentials and degrees, licenses including driver's license, registrations, certificates, and other credentials as part of the appointment process. Some positions, depending on the nature of the work, also require a credit check and a review of Summary Criminal History obtained from the State Department of Justice through Live Scan Fingerprinting.
