Job Duties

The Virginia Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ) protects the public by preparing court-involved youth to be successful citizens. DJJ is committed to excellence in public safety by providing effective interventions that improve the lives of youth, strengthening both families and communities within the Commonwealth.

The role of the Sr. Budget Analyst is to provide concise analysis of program and financial operations, including identifying issues and problem solving. This role will provide technical support for automated data systems and coordination of specific projects and tasks as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles.

  • Extensive knowledge of, and ability to oversee activities regarding, program operations and fiscal practices, policies, and procedures.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of Commonwealth of Virginia systems such as CARDINAL, eVA, and Performance Budgeting.

  • Demonstrated experience of program budget planning, formulation, evaluation, and execution.

  • Ability to manipulate large data sets through automated systems, spreadsheets, and databases.

  • Ability to ensure accuracy and deadline achievement, appropriate analysis of data and situations, and sound advice and recommendations to Department managers and other key members of management.

  • Knowledge of automated software, to include financial applications and database entry.

  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, and to consult with others on matters related to budget and fiscal activities.

  • Skilled in providing excellent customer service to both internal and external customers of the agency.

  • Ability to think strategically and anticipate agency needs for the future.

  • Ability to self-start, work independently or as part of a team, stay current with state and federal regulations, updates, changes, etc., negotiate with a clear objective in mind, and to notify agency personnel of any necessary changes as they may relate to them and/or their duties.

  • Exceptional organizational, analytical, interpersonal and communication skills.

Additional Considerations

  • Training and/or experience in finance, accounting, public administration, political science, business, financial management, economics, or a closely related field.

  • Experience in financial management in a medium to large entity with multiple fund sources and budgets.

  • Experience should include using computer applications for complex and detailed analysis.
