We are seeking a Senior Aviation Planner to join the expanding Aviation Planning group in our San Francisco office. Project types include airport master plans throughout the world recent examples include Mexico City New International Airport, Istanbul New Airport, Barcelona, Madrid, Venice, Krakow, Western Sydney Airport; as well as various types of aviation planning projects (landside, terminal, and airside) throughout North America, including San Francisco, Portland, Seattle-Tacoma, Vancouver, LAX, Orange County, Houston, DFW, JFK, Kansas City, Newark, Boston, Toronto, and Montreal, for both Airport and Airline clients.

Responsibilities may include:

  • Managing project teams by providing technical input to planning concepts, reports, and presentations.

  • Delivering high-quality products, undertaking financial management of projects and being responsible for client relationships, and management of subconsultants.

  • Mentoring and managing junior staff participating in project work.

  • Developing, elaborating, and evaluating conceptual alternatives for major elements of airport infrastructure including airfield, passenger terminal, landside access, cargo, and support areas.

  • Developing design day flight schedules, peak hour demand profiles, and related data syntheses to provide passenger and air traffic demand inputs to analytical tools.

  • Conducting spreadsheet analyses, using custom in-house or commercial software, to develop a facility program of requirements (PoR) for individual airport components or systems of components.

  • Conducting simulation modeling analyses, using custom in-house or commercial simulation software, of individual airport components or systems.

  • Conducting aircraft noise and/or emissions analyses using commercially available tools.

  • Working with Arup's Global Aviation Planning group and local Transportation Planning group to augment and refine custom in-house analytical tools, and/or develop new tools and methodologies.

  • CAD, GIS, and graphic support for a variety of airport planning project types, including ground transport, passenger terminal, airside, airfield, and airspace.

  • Business development, including meeting with clients, developing proposals, promoting the firm.


  • Bachelor's degree required, advanced degree and professional license preferred, in Civil Engineering, Transport Planning, Architecture, or related field.

  • 8 or more years' progressively responsible experience in aviation planning, civil engineering, transport planning, or related field, reflecting a professional awareness of today's aviation industry, as well as the planning, design, construction, financing, operation, and regulation of airports.

  • Knowledge of US FAA policies, regulations, and airport planning standards is required. Knowledge of international (ICAO / IATA, other country-specific) policies, regulations, and airport planning standards is beneficial.

  • Familiarity with aviation databases, including FAA ASPM, OAG, ANOMS, and similar.

  • Project Management experience, including establishment of project scopes and budgets, managing tasks and workflows, interfacing with clients.

Software Capabilities:

Intermediate or advanced capabilities in the use of industry standard software, for example:

  • Analytical and database tools such as MS Excel, Access.

  • CAD / GIS platforms, such as AutoCAD, MicroStation, ArcGIS.

  • Graphics and presentation software packages, such as Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, PowerPoint

  • Aviation / transportation related analytical and simulation models, such as TAAM, CAST, Simio, AEDT, REDIM, other airport capacity and delay models.


  • A commitment to technical accuracy and quality work.

  • Good communication skills essential for team-based working, often in distributed offices.

  • Excellent planning and organization skills required for our fast-paced environment.

  • Must be highly motivated, proactive, and willing to take on new challenges.

What You Will Do * Airport terminal planning * Develop, elaborate, and evaluate planning concept alternatives for major elements of airport infrastructure including airfield, passenger terminal, landside access, cargo, and support areas * Produce airport master planning, system planning, airfield planning, terminal planning, and environmental studies * Facility requirements analysis including coordination of design day flight schedule analysis and reports with outside consultants * Coordination of vertical transportation analysis, studies, and reports * Coordination of baggage handling system planning and design * Prepare technical presentations, reports, scopes of work, budgets, and schedules for airport planning studies * Apply FAA/ICAO/IATA/ACRP criteria and regulations to effectively communicate and collaborate with project team and clients * Work on several projects or issues concurrently * Participate in public meetings, public hearings, agency meetings, and coordinate with airport users * Assist with business development activities and proposal preparation (this feels more like a nice to have than a must have, lots of planners stay completely out of BD/proposal efforts.) Your Qualifications * Professional degree in aviation planning or architecture * 10+ years of experience in the aviation field with recent terminal planning assignments * Knowledge of current aviation industry regulations pertaining to airport terminal planning is required * Familiarity with all terminal, landside and airside components * Recent experience contributing to terminal facility planning design, phasing and implementation projects * Experience managing aviation planning projects, preparing scope of work, project budgets and working collaboratively with project teams to ensure delivery of high-quality project deliverables * Strong analytical, organizational, and communications (oral, verbal and written) skills are required for our fast-paced environment * Knowledge of FAA Advisory Circulars and Orders that pertain to airport planning and design * Knowledge of NFPA requirements as they relate to airport projects * Proficient with Revit, AutoCAD, Word, Excel, and other graphics related programs * Adobe Creative Suite, SketchUp or other 3-D modeling programs a plus Life at Gensler At Gensler, we are as committed to enjoying life as we are to delivering best-in-class design.
