This position represents an exciting opportunity for a multidisciplinary automation scientist to join our Chemistry R&D department and help pioneer new automated products and workflows that address the 'Big Science' questions in our industry and positively impact human health and society.
At Waters, we advance automation for pre-analytic workflows in Pharmaceutical, Food & Environmental, Material, and Clinical Sciences. This scientist role will work in a small interdisciplinary R&D team that works closely with customers and leading experts in our industry to integrate and advance automation of sample preparation and method development for LC-MS analytical workflows. This team empathetically puts the customer needs first and adopts best practices (Design Thinking, Incubation, Lean Startup) to advance technologies and develop innovative technology platforms.
We are looking for a passionate automation/robotics scientist having:
Knowledge of multi-platform liquid handlers and robotics for sample processing
Strong experience developing LC-MS analytical methods incorporating sample preparation
Empathy for customer needs, willingness to experience customer pain points firsthand, and ability to incorporate these insights into their research with hardware-software based implementations
A self-starter attitude in creating innovative technologies, demonstrating a growth mindset, excellent communication, and outstanding organizational skills
A critical thinker having a keen eye for detail, capable of analyzing data and utilizing rigorous approaches in solving complex problems.
Design, build and implement new and existing products into automated workflows, enabling interfaces between software and physical devices
Collaborate with cross-functional teams to understand needs, explore technologies, and advance product design and development
Work independently and as part of a team with a deep focus on challenging technical problems and explain the Why, How, and What that makes your solution technically sound, provide constructive feedback regarding best practices, performance, and maintainability
Stay ahead of the curve with respect to new technologies and techniques to continually improve both the team's skillset and the product goals. Attend and present at conferences, stay up-to-date on literature, aid in customer education, and be versed in current and emerging applications
Be a leader in hypothesis-driven prototype testing of new automated workflows
Inspire others as part of a small R&D team to innovate, develop, and help commercialize new automated platforms
Protect newly developed intellectual property by assisting in the preparation of invention disclosures and patent applications
Take a leading role in new product development activities and ensure products are designed for their intended use
Work with marketing colleagues and other scientific groups to successfully commercialize new products and showcase industry-leading work through publications and collaborations with academia and industry.
A successful candidate should have:
Undergraduate degree (BS) with 5+ years experience, postgraduate degree (Masters) with 2+ years of experience, or Ph.D.
10+ years of experience in sample preparation and LC-MS analytical method development.
First-hand experience in robotics or on-line or off-line automation platforms for sample processing used prior to LC-MS analysis, including: sample reformatting, serial dilution/calibration curve generation, sample extraction, continuous improvement, and interfacing with the robotics platform
Demonstrated experiences taking a leadership role on a multidisciplinary team in address global customer needs
Leadership experience in small groups using best practices from Lean, Agile, Design Thinking, and Lean Startup is desired
Programming proficiency in software relevant to LC, MS, and automation to assist in the development of designing interfaces between hardware and software
Well-developed oral and written communication skills
Drive for personal development, learning new engineering and software in the areas of LC, MS, and automation
Problem solver, who is highly organized, can work independently and as part of a team, who thrives in a research environment with changing priorities and short project timelines.
Excellent interpersonal skills and amenability to a team environment
