The Senior Associate, STS SALT, applies industry knowledge and experience to clients by assisting in providing advice related to tax implications of their business objectives, recommend alternate courses of action, as well as identify different methods of complying with tax regulations. Additional responsibilities include applying knowledge to understand potential tax issues, evaluate and select alternative actions to lessen tax burden and cost of compliance, recognize and communicate potential risks, identify potential changes in the tax policy and apply new policies to tax compliance and assist in handling routine questions from federal or state agencies. This role also serves as primary contact for the clients, as needed, including but not limited to preparing and presenting presentations to clients and potential clients.

Qualifications

Education:

  • Bachelors degree in Accounting or other relevant field required

  • Masters degree in Accounting/Taxation or J.D. preferred

Experience:

  • Two (2)+ years of prior experience in state and local/multistate experience required

License/Certifications:

  • CPA certification or other relevant certification preferred

Software:

  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office Suite, specifically Excel and Word preferred

  • Ability to use standard tax applications and research tools preferred

Tax Senior Associate – State & Local Tax Position Summary: Grant Thornton's responsive, partner-led Tax service teams help dynamic companies navigate complexity and grow with insightful, practical tax advice. In addition to tax professionals in our offices across the United States, our Washington National Tax Office provides deep technical knowledge and responsive support in local, state, federal and international tax. Our tax services include: compliance, human capital services, federal tax services, international tax services, state and local tax services, private wealth services, tax reporting and advisory, partnership taxation, not-for-profit tax, and mergers & acquisition tax services. The Tax Senior Associate in the State & Local Tax group is responsible for delivering a full range of tax planning, consulting and compliance services to clients and works closely with staff on all phases of project and engagement management for multiple clients within our International Accounting Firm. Responsibilities include tax return review and preparation; interacting closely with clients to provide planning, consulting, and compliance expertise; developing and supervising staff; and assisting in client management and practice development activities. Essential Duties and Responsibilities: * Run client engagements from start to finish, which includes planning, executing, directing, and completing tax projects and managing to budget. * Supervise, train, and mentor associates and interns on tax projects and assess performance of staff for engagement reviews; perform in-charge role as needed. * Deliver a full range of State and Local Tax services including tax return preparation and review, tax research, preparation of technical memorandums, and drafting client correspondence. Assignments include reverse sales tax reviews, audit defense, and research of sales tax issues. * Review tax returns done by staff and make recommendations on return preparation regarding accuracy and tax savings opportunities; gain increasing responsibility in review process. * Conduct multi-disciplinary, multi-state reviews that analyze income, franchise, sales and use, payroll, valorem taxes, and others to identify optimal filing options, exemptions, credits and incentives, and corporate structures that can reduce the client's tax burden. * Prepare returns for more complex State and Local Tax returns including Income and Franchise Tax, Sales and Use Tax, Property Tax, etc. and demonstrate an understanding of increasingly complex tax concepts. * Respond to inquiries from the IRS and other tax authorities. * Other duties as assigned. * Bachelor's degree in Accounting. * Two to four years of progressive State and Local Tax compliance and/or tax consulting experience. * Broad exposure to State and Local Taxes including knowledge in State Income/Franchise Tax, Credits and Incentives, Sales and Use Tax; must be eager to work on a variety of SALT issues and not specialize in one particular area. * Strong tax accounting skills with proficiency in US GAAP, tax compliance, corporate consolidated returns, and combined state tax returns. * Ability to supervise staff and lead projects. * Exceptional client service and communication skills with a demonstrated ability to develop and maintain outstanding client relationships. * Strong computer skills including proficiency in Microsoft Office, Fast-Tax software, and CCH. Preferred Skills and Experience: * CPA preferred. * Experience in public accounting. * Property Tax experience is preferred.
