The Pharmaceutical Science and Manufacturing Statistics group supports a wide variety of activities in drug development and manufacturing spanning new and marketed, chemical and biological entities. This position is located at the Groton, CT facility.

ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide primary statistics support to the science and technology lines within Pharmaceutical Sciences: spanning drug substance, drug product, and analytical method development, as well as regulatory activities.

  • Collaborate with scientists to plan meaningful studies, statistically analyze, and communicate / document the results.

  • Demonstrate leadership in influencing and improving workflows by identifying, developing, and applying new quantitative methods as needed to solve problems in pharmaceutical research.

  • Participate in the group's education initiative by teaching courses such as basic statistics, regression analysis, and statistical experimental design.

  • Pursue business-related research interests and represent Pfizer externally.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

  • MS in Statistics or equivalent degree, with one year or more work experience, preferably in a laboratory science environment.

  • Statistical knowledge through coursework and/or demonstrated statistical application in descriptive and inferential statistics, general linear models, mixed models, statistical experimental design, and quality control.

  • Sound computational skills: SAS, S+ / R, or equivalent, and knowledge of a variety of commercial packages.

  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills in explaining complex statistics in the context of experimental objectives.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Significant coursework in a scientific discipline (chemistry, biology, computing, engineering).

  • Prior experience working in pharmaceutical research and development.

  • Strong analytical skills in extracting data from different resources, and organizing, analyzing and interpreting large volumes of data.

  • Good team player with demonstrated ability to build effective working relationships.

  • The flexibility to balance many projects and customers simultaneously.

  • The ability to be independent and learn new skills quickly.

  • The aptitude to identify and understand relevant scientific literature and apply knowledge gained from these sources.

The successful applicant will demonstrate a passion for the theory and laboratory practice of synthetic organic chemistry. He/she will have a proven track record of productivity in generating high-quality technical and scientific results. As part of a medicinal chemistry team, he/she will contribute to the implementation and execution of project chemistry strategy and, through development of innovative chemistry, contribute to the rapid and efficient delivery of clinical candidate molecules. RESPONSIBILITIES * Design, refine and enable synthetic routes to target molecules including versatile, modular routes for analog generation and efficient scalable routes for preclinical candidates. As needed, employ enabled routes to make analogs in singleton or parallel format. * As a strong team player, work within interdisciplinary project teams to deliver on project goals via collaboration and clear communication (written and oral). * Understand project medicinal chemistry strategy and work with the synthesis team to develop a coherent approach for the efficient delivery of target molecules in support of the strategy, be it in the dimensions of prototype synthesis, analogue production or compound scale-up. * Build effective partnerships with other research lines, in particular analytical, technology, pharmaceutical sciences and process chemistry groups. * Publish and present research internally and externally to Pfizer. BASIC QUALIFICATIONS * BS degree with 2+ years of organic chemistry experience or MS degree required. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS * Proven track record of innovation and consistent project impact. * Experience in multistep synthesis; experience in methodology development is valued. * Familiarity in either organometallic chemistry, catalysis, peptide chemistry or chemical biology is highly recommended. * A skilled synthetic organic chemist in practice and theory: firm understanding of reaction mechanisms and reactivity, familiar with a range of reaction types, conditions and scales, knowledge of purification methods and characterization of organic compounds, especially NMR and mass spectroscopy. * Capable of working independently to solve problems through careful experiment design, data analysis, and mechanistic insight. * Capable of independent design/refinement of synthetic routes taking into account the needs of the project (e.g., analogue generation, scale-up). * Effective communication skills (oral and written); must be able to interact effectively within a multidisciplinary team of colleagues.
