ROLE SUMMARY

The incumbent is responsible for supporting the preclinical evaluation and early clinical development of candidate viral vaccines. The incumbent will perform various assays to monitor the immune responses elicited by vaccine candidates.

This position will also be responsible for maintaining cell lines, weekly processing of red blood cells, and preparing samples for testing. The incumbent will assist with molecular and virology work to generate plasmid constructs for RNA and reverse genetic virus stocks plus optimizing RNA vaccines. Work is to be done in a compliant manner according to relevant SOP guidelines and cGLP and/or cGMP guidelines where appropriate. The incumbent will be part of a dynamic team and should possess a strong work ethic and collaborative spirit.

ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES

Analyze immune responses to vaccine candidates using techniques that include (but are not limited to) cell culture, hemagglutination inhibition assays, neutralization assays, ELISAs, ELISPOT and RT-PCR. Perform molecular techniques that include (but are not limited to) PCR, cloning, and sequence and virology techniques that include virus propagation in cell culture.

Independently interpret and summarize experimental data. Present experimental results at group meetings. Generate and characterize reagents used to perform necessary assays and support maintenance of laboratory supplies.

Maintain laboratory notebooks in compliance with the Pfizer Laboratory Notebook Policy. Performs other duties as assigned. Satisfactorily complete all safety training in conformance with Departmental requirements. Where applicable, performs job responsibilities in compliance with cGMP/GLP and all other regulatory agency requirements.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master's degree in Virology, Immunology or Molecular Biology with 2 years of research experience OR B.S. with 6 years of laboratory research experience required; industry experience preferred.

  • Knowledge of methods in influenza virology and immunology highly preferred.

  • Proficiency with personal computers including Word, Excel or Graphpad Prism, PowerPoint and relevant scientific software is desirable.

PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS

Basic laboratory training in aseptic technique is essential. Ability to work with infectious agents safely. The capacity to work effectively in a highly visible research program with time-constrained milestones.

The program integrates RNA platform development, cutting edge influenza vaccine science, and working knowledge of the current influenza vaccine seasonal update and pandemic response systems. The goal is to deliver every season a reliable, game-changing influenza vaccine with superior efficacy. The role will involve developing, executing, and interpreting scientific experiments to bring the RNA influenza vaccine from concept to development. The incumbent will work closely with the CSO, project teams, supporting lines, team members, and external collaborators to drive the design and execution of in vitro and in vivo studies, and take a "hands on" role to support laboratory activities. The incumbent will contribute to strategic directions for influenza virology and immunology. The incumbent will be part of a dynamic team and should possess a strong work ethic and collaborative spirit. May also apply expertise to the respiratory syncytial virus and cytomegalovirus vaccine programs. With the evolution of the vaccine portfolio, key roles in other future vaccine research and development programs are likely. ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES Combine expertise in influenza virology, viral immunology, and vaccinology to advance the RNA-influenza vaccine program. Perform and oversee virology and viral immunology experiments include experiments related to influenza, RSV, and CMV vaccines. Mentor junior scientists' activities and provide technical guidance when necessary and serve as a subject matter expert in influenza virology. Maintain high technical quality and initiate problem solving for all technical issues related to the area of expertise. Incumbent will analyze scientific strategy and experimental data, draw conclusions, and propose future research plans. Coordinate and communicate experimental results in a timely manner. Present experimental results at appropriate meetings with group members and senior management. Write progress reports and provide concise summaries of project status to team members and CSO. Keep current on scientific and technical literature and attend relevant scientific meetings in order to apply new technologies and/or scientific principles. The incumbent will organize and prioritize own work schedule in order to accommodate multiple projects or tasks. The incumbent makes decisions that affect the rate of progress made on the group's assigned research projects. This contributes to the overall efficiency of the research team.
