Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit

As the largest unit on campus, the College of Arts and Sciences forms the academic core of the Carolina experience. Our mission is to create knowledge and discover innovative solutions to the world's greatest challenges, to educate outstanding undergraduate and graduate students, and to encourage faculty, staff and students to contribute meaningfully to North Carolina, the nation and the world. The College is home to more than 18,000 undergraduate students, including all of the University's first-year and second-year students, and more than 75 percent of junior and senior majors. (More than 80% of Carolina students graduate with at least one major from the College.) Some 2,300 graduate students study and teach in the College.

The College of Arts & Sciences, administered by the Dean, consists of over seventy-one academic departments, curricula, programs, centers, and Institutes. The College is divided into seven divisions, which are overseen by Senior Associate Deans.

All academic departments and curricula are assigned to one of the following three divisions Fine Arts and Humanities, Natural Sciences, and Social Science. A fourth division, Undergraduate Education, houses curriculum and instructional innovation, honors and distinguished scholarships, and student academic support. These Senior Associate Deans, along with the Senior Associate Dean for Operations & Strategy, Senior Associate Dean for Diversity, Equity & inclusion, Senior Associate Dean for Development, the Associate Dean for Research & Innovation, and the Director of Communications for the College, all report to the Dean.

The College's Division of Operations, led by the Senior Associate Dean for Operations & Strategy, comprise over 50 professional staff and include the offices of Finance and Budget Management, Information Technology and Data Analytics, Facilities, and Dean's Office administration.

Position Summary

The Senior Associate Dean for Operations and Strategy (Senior Associate Dean) provides operational support, strategic direction and leadership in the management of resources within the College of Arts and Sciences. The Senior Associate Dean provides senior-level administrative leadership for the College, modeling the highest level of excellence, fairness, proactivity, support for diversity, inclusion and civility, and understanding about the College in the context of UNC-Chapel Hill and the UNC system.

The person in this position will serve as an advisor to the Dean on matters relating to finance, budget planning, resource reallocation, data analytics and reporting, planning and strategy of the College's facilities operations, space resources, capital projects and the efficient use of space throughout the College. The Senior Associate Dean will design, implement, execute, assess and drive continuous improvement for administrative activities within the College.

The Senior Associate Dean will report directly to the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and will be a member of the Dean's senior administrative staff, participating in the planning, development, and implementation of College priorities and activities. The Senior Associate Dean also is a resource, consultant and problem solver for department chairs and other leaders within the College and a liaison and connector to a range of UNC programs and people.

S/he accomplishes these aims with a high level of coordination and collaboration with key groups of faculty, staff and students across the College, as well as individuals and organizations across the University and beyond. As chief administrative officer this position will lead the execution of strategies to meet the priorities determined by the Dean.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Relevant post-Baccalaureate degree required (or foreign degree equivalent) with three years or greater of related professional experience; for candidates demonstrating comparable professional backgrounds, will accept a relevant Bachelor's degree (or foreign degree equivalent) and five years or greater of relevant experience in substitution.

Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience

The successful candidate should be a highly collaborative leader with superior communication and decision-making skills. Significant experience in higher education administration, particularly in roles involving strategic planning, operations management, and leadership.

Financial management skills, including budgeting and resource allocation. Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret data and make data-driven decisions. Willingness to embrace innovation and explore new approaches to addressing challenges in higher education. Knowledge of operational processes and systems within higher education institutions.

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience

Eight or more years of progressive experience in a research university setting; process improvements and team building experience; superior communication and decision-making skills. Strong preference will be given to candidates with experience directing the operations of a shared services organization. Experience with PeopleSoft or comparable enterprise resource planning system is preferred. .

Campus Security Authority Responsibilities

This position is designated as a Campus Security Authority in accordance with the Clery Act. This position will be required to report Clery crimes to the Clery Compliance Manager and complete annual training about reporting responsibilities.
