QUALIFICATIONS FOR THE JOB

Education:

High school diploma or general equivalency degree equivalent, but must have an associate's Degree three years from the date of hire from an accredited college or institution recognized by the Department of Education (DOE) or the Council of Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA).

Experience:

A minimum of 20 years Active Federal Service; experience in supply, administration, drill and ceremonies, and teaching.

Other:

Possess a valid U.S. Army Cadet Command JROTC Instructor Qualification Memorandum.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

(Possess sufficient medical, physical, and mental fitness, and be willing to perform, participate in, and supervise activities consistent with the conduct of the Junior ROTC program. Activities include, but are not limited to -

(a) Platform and student-centered instruction

(b) Marksmanship training

(c) Conduct of drill and ceremonies

(d) Leadership training

(e) Water activities

(f) Climbing (stairs and ladder)

(g) Ability to lift and move materials up to 50 pounds in weight

(h) Physical training

(i) Summer camp up to 2 weeks

(j) Training and events outside of normal classroom hours

Spartanburg High School Army JROTC is a battalion-size unit of approximately 200 cadets located within a public high school within the Spartanburg city limits serving students in grades 9-12.

GENERAL JOB DESCRIPTION

The Assistant Enlisted Army JROTC Instructor (AI) works directly for the Senior Army JROTC Instructor (SAI). He or she is responsible for the Leadership Education portion of the curriculum. This includes drill and ceremonies, principles of leadership and management, and communication skills.

He or she assists the SAI in teaching, particularly those areas where he or she has special competence because of his or her experience and training. He or she may give or grade tests, give career and performance counseling, and supervise Cadet Activities. He or she is also involved in the enrollment and co-curricular activities.

The AI is appointed Military Property Specialist and is responsible for uniforms and equipment and for other administrative matters. He or she will wear his or her Army Service Uniform while performing AJROTC duties. The instructors, although not on active duty, are still working in and managing a military-type unit.

The same NCO-Officer, subordinate-supervisor relationship which existed on active duty must be maintained in the AJROTC unit. Only those NCOs who can support the objectives of AJROTC and give their full loyalty, support, and cooperation to the SAI in achieving goals should apply.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Assist the SAI in teaching Leadership Education Training to high school students in a classroom setting, particularly those areas where the AI has special competence because of his or her experience and training. Give or grade tests, give career and performance counseling, and supervise Cadet Activities.

Responsible for the Leadership Education portion of the curriculum; this includes drill and ceremonies, principles of leadership and management, and communication skills. Responsible for accountability of uniforms and equipment and other administrative matters. Responsible for coaching and training JROTC special teams for participation in events outside of normal classroom hours and over weekends.

MINOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Perform additional duties as required by the school. Additional duties may include hall monitor, chaperone, event security, test proctor, cafeteria duty, etc.
