The Facilities Maintenance and Engineering(FME) Directorate is responsible for laboratory and administrative space,infrastructure, campus landscape, and planning, design, and constructionmanagement activities at Frederick National Laboratory for Cancer Research.


The Senior Architectural Designer isresponsible for:

  • Working with the scientific users to developfloor plans and equipment layouts for laboratories

  • Detailed design of laboratory floor plans andelevations, including casework, laboratory equipment and safety equipment

  • Designing modifications/repairs to buildingexteriors, structures and site

  • Providing technical guidance to contractors,a&es, scientific personnel and maintenance shops

  • Reviewing architectural engineering plans andspecifications

  • Ensuring compliance with engineering practicesand established laws, codes, regulations, and standards, including the NIHdesign requirements manual

  • Performing on-site technical inspections ofequipment and systems to ensure design and specification compliance



To be considered forthis position, you must minimally meet the knowledge, skills, and abilitieslisted below:

  • Possession of a Bachelor's degree from anaccredited college or university according to the Council for Higher EducationAccreditation. (Additional qualifying experience may be substituted for therequired education). Foreign degrees mustbe evaluated for U.S. equivalency

  • In addition to the educational requirements, aminimum of six (6) years of experience in drafting or architectural design

  • Experience designing using AutoCad software

  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a securityclearance


Candidates with thesedesired skills will be given preferential consideration:

  • Familiarity with scientific/laboratory caseworkand equipment
