Senior Application Engineer

Job Summary

The Application Engineer focuses on administration, monitoring and maintenance of custom and/or third party applications, services and related infrastructure components. This individual will have demonstrated experience in troubleshooting problems, product improvement, and effective communication with both IT and business partners. Personality and team focus are critical to success at UFCU.

With limited supervision the candidate must support secure applications based upon requirements. This candidate must be proactive in delivering successful solutions, including helping define requirements, application deployment, implementing best-practices, supporting testing efforts, and providing documentation while working with business partners. This role is also responsible for proactively providing project tasks and status updates. This role will provide guidance to junior team members.

Essential Functions

Application Support:

  • Serve as the subject matter expert for applications used by UFCU staff and members.

  • Install, configure and maintain SaaS and On-Premise applications as well as retain application configurations

  • Support projects that to enhance, upgrade or replace applications

  • Work with vendors to install, support, upgrade and maintain applications

  • Develop processing schedules and ensure scheduled jobs and automated processes run as designed

  • Participate in after-hours systems support activities and on call rotation as required

Service Availability

  • Setup and maintain disaster recovery systems and procedures to support business continuity

  • Conduct disaster recovery testing of critical data and systems to assure its readiness when needed

  • Document application recovery procedures

  • Conduct proactive capacity and performance planning to ensure systems appropriately meet customer demand

  • Implement comprehensive system monitoring to reduce response time and minimize downtime

Incident Management and Request Fulfillment:

  • Demonstrate service excellence with an emphasis on ownership of issues and drive for results

  • Complete incident and service request tasks in a timely manner in order to meet service level agreements

  • Troubleshoot and resolve complex issues

  • Conduct root cause analysis as needed and take action to prevent future occurrences of incidents

Other:

  • Perform other duties as assigned

  • Adhere to all company policies, procedures, and business ethics codes

  • Maintain strict adherence and compliance to all laws, rules, regulations, policies, procedures and internal controls specific to your role

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

  • Ability to effectively communicate with both IT and business partners

  • Ability to work collaboratively with others and inspire teams

  • Demonstrated knowledge of IT technologies - server, network, database, storage and monitoring

  • Excellent analytical and troubleshooting skills

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment

  • Ability to engage in problem-solving skills to help identify and resolve issues

Experience

Minimum Qualifications

  • Associate degree in Computer Science or equivalent

  • 5+ years application support experience

  • 3-5 years API technology

  • 3-5 years mobile device support and mobile app provisioning

  • 1-2 years cloud solutions and products

  • Experience with Docker or containerization

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment

  • Ability to engage in problem-solving skills to help identify and resolve issues

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science or equivalent.

  • Experience working for a financial institution.

  • Experience scripting with PowerShell, Python, or a similar language.

  • Familiarity with Java.

  • Familiarity with DevOps practices and CI/CD pipelines.

  • Advanced knowledge of cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud Platform.

  • Experience with database management (SQL and NoSQL).

  • Understanding of cybersecurity best practices and experience with securing applications and infrastructure.

  • Frequent computer use at a workstation up to two hours at a time.

  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
