Our Health and Benefits business helps large and mid-size clients control health and welfare plan costs, improve health outcomes and promote employee engagement through broad-based, state-of-the-art interventions. We provide solutions encompassing creative plan design, vendor evaluation and management, pricing and funding strategies, data analytics, valuation support, compliance and governance strategies. We also provide Specialty consulting services including clinical/health management program design, pharmacy solutions, disability/absence management strategies, health analytics and claims audit services. Product based solutions such as our pharmacy purchasing coalition round out our broad-based suite of offerings.

The Role

As a Senior Actuarial Consultant you will be primarily responsible for serving as the deep technical expert for complex, large client projects. You will also lead and deliver large, strategic client engagements and relationships on your own. You will lead and develop a team of more junior actuaries. You'll also be asked to contribute your thought leadership to the overall development of the Health and Benefits business.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Serve as Senior Actuary for select clients

  • Provide deep level of technical expertise for complex and large client relationships

  • Oversee actuaries and other financial experts in the delivery of value added models, projections and analytics

  • Serve as internal consultant on client assignments

  • Lead and manage large, complex client relationships from a Health and Benefits perspective

  • Build leveraged teams that work effectively together

  • Develop plans for execution of large, global engagements

  • Ensure project managers are maintaining team progress against established budget, timeline and quality standards (while you have overall responsibility, consultant level staff typically serve as day to day project managers)

  • Finalize and present quality deliverables to clients

  • Help grow Health and Benefits revenue through:

  • Serving as the lead technical Health and Benefits expert in closing new opportunities

  • Cross-selling new projects and services to your own book of clients

  • Provide guidance and support to other actuaries; perform technical review of work products

  • Contribute to the development of new Health and Benefits consulting tools and approaches

The Requirements

  • 10+ years' experience and success in the design/management of group health and welfare plans, particularly from an actuarial/financial perspective, gained in a consulting or brokerage environment

  • Deep health and benefits technical, actuarial experience

  • Track record of success in managing large client relationships and growing revenue

  • Experience in managing multiple people and projects and producing quality deliverables on time and within budget

  • Proven ability to recognize and diagnose issues, work in teams, and leverage the resources of other related practices to address client challenges

  • Track record of leadership and developing/mentoring more junior colleagues

  • An executive presence with polished and well developed written and oral communication skills

  • Superior ability to influence and collaborate with senior management and work across all levels of an organization

  • Interest and aptitude in keeping abreast of latest developments in health and benefits plan strategy and contributing to the development of new tools and approaches

  • BA/BS degree plus ASA required, FSA/FCIA preferred

Responsibilities: * Materially contribute to core health and benefits projects involving the design and management of group medical, dental, life, disability and time off benefits for large, complex clients * Contribute to projects within the Specialty area including health management/wellness, disability/absence management, pharmacy and claims audits * Partner with Consultants to deliver superior project management on select clients * Perform financial analyses including developing pricing and employee contributions strategies, modelling plan design alternatives and calculating reserves * Conduct benchmarking studies and other research; provide value added analyses and summaries * Analyze and compare vendor products, services and contracts * Design, distribute and evaluate responses to surveys and RFPs * Build relationships internally and collaborate effectively on cross-functional teams * Review analytical work, mentor and develop junior level staff * Contribute to the development of new intellectual capital The Requirements * 3+ years' experience dealing with the financials of health and welfare plans, ideally gained in a benefit consulting/brokerage firm or health underwriting / actuarial function of an insurance company * Proven ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and produce quality deliverables on time and within budget * Flexibility and proven ability to identify and resolve issues * Strong client service orientation and ability to respond to all communications effectively and in a timely manner * Strong written and verbal communication skills * Self-starter attitude and ability to work individually and as part of a team * Strong analytical, creative and integrative skills * Desire to mentor/develop more junior staff * Excellent Microsoft Office skills, particularly in Excel and PowerPoint EOE, including disability/vets Willis Towers Watson Arlington VA
