Housed in the Academic Center for Excellence and reporting to the Director, the Academic Support Advisor is responsible for advising medical students across the medical school curriculum. The advisor will assist students with academic concerns by establishing helping relationships, identifying difficulties and available resources, and in understanding the promotion policies and procedures required for successful completion of their medical education. Successful applicants will have training or professional experience in forming helping relationships with learners in the context of applied learning science.

  • Supports a population of over 600 medical school students.

  • Establishes helping relationships with medical students as a foundation for academic counseling, namely and assisting students with academic difficulties and the concomitant stressors of medical school.

  • Conducts informal academic assessments to identify problem areas in students' approaches to learning.

  • Makes recommendations to enhance students' approaches to learning based on evidence from the learning sciences.

  • Makes appropriate referrals for mental health and medical assessment and treatment.

  • Identifies and provides direct assistance for students in developing individualized learning plans. Monitors progress and modifies as needed.

  • Partners with faculty, staff and administrators as part of student development team.

  • Develops and maintains programs to promote medical student academic success and retention, including sessions on time management, knowledge organization, efficient reading, study strategies and test taking skills (USMLE prep).

  • Coordinates tutoring services.

  • Participates with Careers in Medicine team to offer timely programming to students.

  • Works in collaboration with faculty and directors for the pre-clinical science courses and the clerkships.

  • Researches and identifies best practices and future trends in order to continuously improve offerings to students.

  • Develops E-learning modules to increase access to resources and layer with advising/programming resources.

  • Performs other duties as required.

Minimum Education and/or Work Experience

  • Master's degree, Terminal degree preferred, in the area of Higher Education, Social Work, Educational Psychology, Counseling or related field.

Experience working with adult learners in higher education or professional education, preferred.

Minimum of five years of experience in professional setting serving a diverse population.
