Position Title: Senior Accounting Leader

Location: Atlanta, GA

Reports To: Manager, General Accounting

The Senior Accounting Leader will be responsible of the financial close of a particular General Accounting Function across Newell. Accountability, accuracy and timeliness will be key to their success, rewarded with exposure to business and operations leadership. The Senior Accounting Leader will also lead strategic accounting and process improvement initiatives and as well will be the point of contact of divisions for service and additional scope initiatives and implementation. Accountable execution and development of Global Standard Process for the assigned scope of activities

  • Leads general accounting close management, accountable for the closing process, ensuring global compliance with corporate deadlines-schedule with quality and accuracy of the financial statements of Newell Brands

  • Performs key regional close activities, preparing and reviewing complex accounting journal entries, coordinating staff across the globe and resolving issues

  • Creates bridge between accounting, finance and operations, providing GAAP leadership, offering procedural guidance, ensuring SOX compliance and completing routine balance sheet reviews

  • Responsible for ensuring that the results for affiliate entities are accurate and for reviewing the intercompany relationships to ensure that all amounts are eliminated each month

  • Work directly with staff accountants and Senior Accountant analyst across the Globe, ensuring tasks completed in a timely and accurate manner

  • Leads strategic corporate projects and team continuous improvement initiatives and global standardization

  • Applies fundamental accounting theories and concepts to support the business operations in day-to-day accounting needs, resolving General Accounting related issues and disputes or escalating, as required.

  • Reviews existing processes, recommending opportunities to streamline and standardize regionally or globally

  • Supports internal and external audits, sales and use tax filings and federal tax filings

  • Performs such individual assignments as management may direct

  • Establishes and maintains effective work relationships with stakeholders at all levels

  • Maintains the professional competence, knowledge and skills necessary for assigned responsibilities

  • Trial Balance reviews and sign off with corporate accounting for Global Scope of activities, main point of contact for corporate accounting to address issues and resolve closing discrepancies for the assigned Global Scope, coordination with the regions to reopen of books or adjustments at close

  • Coordinate the migration of new brands and business unto SAP


  • BS Degree in Accounting

  • Strong knowledge of US GAAP

  • Proven experience leading month end close 2-5 years

  • 3-5 years in corporate accounting environments, preferably multi-layered, global organizations

  • CPA or equivalent experience preferred

  • Public accounting experience preferred

  • SAP Experience preferred

  • Audit Experience preferred

  • Attention to detail and accuracy

  • Ability to self-start, prioritize work and follow through

  • Team management skills

  • Advanced MS Excel skills, managing spreadsheets and using advanced formulas

Primary Responsibilities: * Maintain complete and accurate financial statements in accordance with GAAP. * Perform advanced analysis of data looking for and creating automation/robotics opportunities. * Provide excellent customer service to our business partners to help drive good business decision making including reporting on actuals of financials and variances to forecast explanations. * Leads end to end ownership of multiple significant accounting processes to ensure consistent and accurate financial statements, identify anomalies and make recommendations. * Excellent attention to detail. * Provide subject matter expertise within our area of focus; resolve questions and/or problems. * Develop business partnerships to maintain alignment. * Monitor and optimize business processes by reviewing operational & financial processes to ensure compliance and effectiveness, identify anomalies and make recommendations. * Provide ad-hoc analysis based on customer need. * Assist with policy updates, development and enforcement. * Propose, gain approval and monitor KPIs. Skills: * Analytical and detailed-oriented. * Proficient Project Management skills. * Outstanding communication and presentation skills. * Curious, Proactive, Process Improvement mindset. * Extensive understanding of accounting concepts. * Collaborative and strategic thinker. Qualifications: Minimum: * BS/BA in Accounting, Finance required * 5 or more years of experience preferred in related field (Finance, Accounting, Business, IT, etc.); 3 or more years with a related advanced degree. * Proficient in Microsoft products (Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Oracle and other tools, etc. * Excellent interpersonal, leadership, presentation, and collaborative skills to work effectively with cross-functional partners throughout the organization. * Team player, reliable, flexible, and active participant on the team. * Ability to multi-task and work in a challenging fast paced changing environment. Preferred: * Knowledge of Tableau, Oracle, Essbase/SmartView, SQL, etc. * Experience working with an outsourced team. * CPA or advanced degree.
