Responsible for day to day activities of accounting for higher risk, more complex transactions and account balances, and performance of the month-end financial statement close processes and internal controls related to those transactions and account balances. Assists with various analyses and requests from management and other departments. Provides guidance and training to lower-level accounting staff.

Essential Functions

  • Responsible for higher risk or more complex transactions and account balances, such as Medicare Part D accounting, Medicare and Medicaid revenue, IBNR and medical costs, etc.

  • Serve as "subject matter expert" for assigned areas, including a detailed understanding of the underlying processes and transactions and the ability to analyze anomalies and recommend course of actions. Work with related departments to ensure appropriate accounting and reporting of those areas. Communicate issues clearly and confidently with management and other departments.

  • Responsible for timely, accurate financial statement close (related to assigned accounts/transactions) each month. Monitor tasks owned and proactively identify/resolve delays and/or issues. Ensure progress is communicated to supervisor.

  • Create and upload journal entries. Appropriately document and support all transactions.

  • Prepare month-end reconciliations and analyses for assigned accounts. Perform and document all related internal controls and maintain appropriate evidence. Reconcile investment and bank statements to general ledger

  • Comply with all corporate policies, GAAP standards and statutory requirements.

  • Proactively identify inconsistencies, errors, and/or issues and recommend actions/resolution to supervisor.

  • Prepare and maintain process documentation and drive change for new processes and controls or improvements to existing processes and controls. Proactively identify and present proposed process improvements.

  • Respond timely and completely to requests from management and other departments.

  • Prepare requested supporting schedules for audit and financial reporting purposes.

  • Assist with and volunteer for other special projects, implementations, etc.

  • Provide guidance and cross-training to lower-level accounting staff.


Undergraduate degree in accounting or finance preferred, or commensurate experience

3 years of general accounting experience. A mix of public accounting and private industry experience is a plus.

Managed care industry experience preferred.

Technical Skills/Requirements:

General ledger software experience preferred, proficiency with Excel (including pivot tables, V-lookup, etc. is a must.

RESPONSIBILITIES * Assist Finance Manager with monthly close processes for all entities including but not limited to general ledger review, journal preparations, and analysis and reconciliation of P&L and Balance Sheet accounts. * Conduct a reconciliation of all bank accounts. * Input daily sales data for all entities and revenue streams, reconcile any discrepancies. * Reconcile deferred revenue balances on a monthly basis to ensure proper timing of recognition. * Work with licensing partners for weekly reimbursement of expenses. Reconcile any discrepancies. * Manage expense reporting for corporate card users. Reconcile monthly statements and ensure compliance with company policies. * Input weekly payroll journal entry. Reconcile entry to payroll registers and to weekly bank activity. * Conduct periodic audits of all accounts to ensure their accuracy. * Assist in external audit. * Implement system/process improvements where necessary. * File monthly and quarterly indirect taxes. Research local taxability of products sold to ensure compliance and verify proper taxes are collected at the point of sale. * Ad hoc projects to assist the Finance Manager. * Manage AP activity and ensure invoices are paid in a timely manner. * Oversee AR activity and ensure outstanding balances are collected promptly. * Fully understand the Milk Bar ethos and serve as a brand ambassador, both internally and externally, making peoples lives a little sweeter. SKILLS & REQUIREMENTS * Bachelor's Degree required, degree in Accounting preferred * CPA mandatory * 2-4 years of related experience; public accounting experience a plus * Understanding of accounting principles and GAAP * Solid foundation working with Excel and ability to adapt to new software * Strong organizational skills and attention to detail * Experience with Compeat Milk Bar New York NY
