The Senior Accountant on the Corporate Accounting team partners with various business units and cross functional teams to provide accounting oversight and support. This position supports the monthly and quarterly accounting close processes as well as any Sarbanes-Oxley self-assessment testing. The position will drive process improvements by identifying and executing changes to be more efficient and effective as well as supporting our external reporting requirements and audit activities.

  • Support monthly and quarter close processes, including review and preparation of journal entries and account reconciliations as well as reporting and analytics for area of responsibility

  • Provide technical accounting support (U.S GAAP accounting guidance) to the business unit partners, including research and recommendations on accounting issues, as well as implementation of accounting and policy changes.

  • Participate in Sarbanes-Oxley self- assessment testing for owned areas

  • Provide support to internal and external audit activities including preparation and review of audit schedules as needed

  • Drive process improvements by identifying and executing changes to be more effective and efficient including leveraging data and technology to unlock value

  • Other ad hoc requests, such as documentation of key transactions through technical accounting memorandums and other projects to support accounting team or business units.

  • Minimum of 3-5 years of accounting or relevant experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance

  • Strong understanding of US GAAP and financial statements

  • Attention to detail resulting in consistent, reliable and accurate work product

  • Strong written and oral communication skills

  • Strong planning and organizational skills, with ability to prioritize

  • Flexible, adaptable and proactive

  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively in teams and with cross functional partners

  • Strong understanding the financial close processes

  • Strong process improvement mindset with ability to identify and implement changes

  • Proficient in PC applications (eg Excel, Microsoft Office)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with a major ERP system (SAP, HFM)

  • Big 4 or public accounting experience preferred

  • CPA certificate/candidate

  • Experience with Power BI and Power Query

Responsible for gathering and analyzing complex financial information, evaluating accounting implications, and formulating recommendations for senior management based on findings. Provide technical guidance on accounting and fiscal procedures. Responsible for continuous improvement through the evaluation of accounting and reporting controls and the implementation of corrective action plans; support of the implementation of projects to improve and/or facilitate accounting and reporting functions; working with internal and external auditors and implementing recommendations, as applicable; fielding internal and external inquiries, including those from external parties (e.g., other Plans and the Association), and/or interfacing with senior management. * Review investment journal entries and account reconciliations, assist with the monthly close activities, prepare schedules and other general accounting functions. * Manage or perform functions related to accounting and or reporting on a GAAP/SAP basis. * Analyze investment account activity and interact with the portfolio managers. * Participate in investment accounting issues resolution and process procedural changes. * Research investment accounting policy (including technical accounting pronouncements, promulgated regulatory bulletins, and benchmarked industry information). * Gather and analyze complex investment financial information, evaluate investment accounting implications, and formulate recommendations for senior management based on findings. * Prepare financial analyses and reports of findings and prepares recommendations to management. * Coordinate and manage all the aspects related to the general ledger accounting for all the investments and to interact with the investment accounting system. * Initiate projects to improve processes/controls, partner with project teams to ensure resolution of project/post-project issues and participate on cross-functional projects as a finance representative. * Work closely with other BCBS plans and the BCBSA to resolve investment accounting and reporting issues. * Provide assistance in the preparation of valuation materials and assist in monitoring of valuation procedures. * Assist with audits by providing requested information to auditors and resolve issues and draft resolutions. * Perform a detailed review of the yearly audited financial statements related to investments, make plans for alternative investment options, and after properly reviewing it, document it in an appropriate manner to be reviewed by the internal and external resources. * Maintain and enhance internal controls and perform self-testing.
