Job Description:

Virginia Peninsula Community College is a two-year institution of higher education established as a part of a statewide system of community colleges. It primarily serves the residents of the cities of Hampton, Newport News, Poquoson, and Williamsburg, and the counties of James City and York.

The search will remain open until the position is filled; however, to be considered for the initial screening, candidates should submit a complete application package by February 26, 2024.

This position is responsible for accurate and timely processing, recording and reconciliation of transactions including but not limited to local and state funds, accounts payable, payroll and grant financial transactions for Virginia Peninsula Community College. Prepares and validates financial statements and other related schedules. Prepares financial reports involving the compilation and analysis of fiscal data and proper classification for reporting purposes. Works with grant program manager to track, audit, reconcile and report on grants; performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Extensive and varied accounting experience with primary or considerable responsibility for month-end and year-end closing cycles.

  • Relevant work experience in grant accounting including compilation, validation, expense analysis, expense reimbursement, and reporting to internal and external stakeholders.

  • Primary or significant experience with and responsibility for preparation and/or review of year-end financial statement schedules.

  • Experience serving as the subject matter expert in the interpretation and application of accounting principles and treatment.

Specialized Knowledge:

  • Comprehensive knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and Governmental Accounting Standards.

  • Thorough knowledge of Grant Accounting, Grant Reporting, Code of Federal Regulations (CFR), Title 2, Part 200 Uniform Administrative Requirements, Cost Principles, and Audit Requirements for Federal Awards.

  • Thorough knowledge of month and year-end accounting cycles and processes to include revenue, accounts receivable, procurement, accounts payable, payroll, fixed assets, cash management, financial statement preparation, and external audits and reviews.

  • Working knowledge of Higher Education Accounting Standards.

  • Working knowledge of federal, state, and local regulations.

Skills:

  • Strong organizational skills.

  • Proficiency in accounting software and systems.

  • Excellent time management skills.

  • Proficiency in critical thinking, problem solving, and emotional intelligence.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite with advanced skill in Excel.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Apply comprehensive accounting knowledge and experience to produce complete, accurate, and timely financial information.

  • Leverage accounting and grant knowledge and experience to inform good decisions on all accounting and financial reporting matters.

  • Manage multiple priorities effectively, prioritize work appropriately, be adaptable to changing needs, and consistently meet deadlines under pressure.

  • Complete tasks and projects by the established deadlines.

  • Effectively analyze financial data, perform complex reconciliation of financial information, and reach accurate, informed conclusions.

  • Understand and present moderately complex financial information to diverse audiences in an understandable format.

  • Analyze, understand, and improve efficiencies on complex processes.

  • Interpret and apply accounting standards (internal and external).

  • Identify opportunities to improve internal controls.

  • Commute to and work at all campus locations as needed.

  • Maintain confidentiality, inspire trust and reliability, and strengthen relationships across the college.

  • Work independently or with minimum supervision while maintaining established standards with a high degree of accuracy.

  • Adhere to federal, state and local policies, procedures, laws and regulations to ensure compliance with Department of Labor, Department of Education, and other grantors.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Relevant accounting working experience within a higher education, governmental, or not-for-profit setting.
