  • Analyzes, reconciles and consolidates vouchers, records, journals, ledgers and statements.

  • Monitors expenditures to ensure compliance with budgetary recommendations.

  • Reviews financial transactions and codes for conformance to standard procedures and accounts.

  • Compiles, analyzes and prepares a variety of statements and reports for state, special, private or federal funded programs for use in financial, budget and personnel planning.

  • Develops cost projections based on past records and anticipated activities and makes fiscally sound recommendations.

  • Applies standardized accounting principles and practices.

  • Reviews internal accounting policies and procedures and makes recommendations for revisions.

Job Requirements

JOB REQUIREMENTS for Senior Accountant

Applicants must have education, training and/or experience demonstrating competence in each of the following areas:

  • Six months experience in accounting using Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).

  • Six months experience in compiling, analyzing and interpreting financial data to ensure effective and efficient accounting of funds or to make projections for financial planning.

  • Six months experience in creating financial reports which includes combining and presenting financial data from multiple sources in an organized format.

  • Six months experience in interpreting laws, rules, regulations, standards, policies, and procedures.

  • Six months experience in using an automated information system to enter, update, modify, delete, retrieve/inquire and report on data.

  • Knowledge of staff supervision acquired through course work, academic training, training provided through an employer, or performing as a lead worker overseeing the work of others; OR supervising staff which may include planning, assigning, reviewing, and evaluating the work of others; OR supervising through subordinate supervisors a group of professional, technical, and clerical employees.

Function: Supports all accounting-related projects, analyses and conversions for an assigned area outside Finance. Responsible for development and management of operational accounting control functions in support of the Bank's accounting systems, including maintaining accounting entry flow process to support accurate and timely reconciliation of all general ledger accounts and internal and external reporting of financial information and regulatory reporting. Independently leads projects within or across Departments, representing the Department in enterprise-wide projects and/or supporting other systems. Responsibilities: Oversee support for the monthly closing of the general ledger for an assigned area outside Finance, including analyzing and interpreting account fluctuations and monthly/quarterly reporting (could include manual processing). Oversee or coordinate monthly variance analyses, reconciliations, tests of accounting data integrity and work paper review. Review accounting transaction documentation for completeness and accuracy; identify and work to resolve more complex accounting issues and variances. Provide guidance and mentoring to less experienced personnel, including providing input to the annual review process for them. Spearhead the improvement and implementation of existing processes and new processes related to the accounting for various products that enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of the department/division/Bank. Coordinate the integration of acquired portfolios to the Bank's general ledger. Oversee support for the creation of Business requirements documents and functional requirements as well as the testing and implementation of those new requirements. Understand and adhere to the Company's risk and regulatory standards, policies and controls in accordance with the Company's Risk Appetite. Identify risk-related issues needing escalation to management. Promote an environment that supports diversity and reflects the M&T Bank brand. Maintain M&T internal control standards, including timely implementation of internal and external audit points together with any issues raised by external regulators as applicable. Complete other related duties as assigned. Nature & Scope: The position works independently under general supervision as well as a member/leader of a project team. This position has interaction with internal Bank business partners as well as internal and external auditors and assists less experienced personnel on more complex issues.
