San Diego Metropolitan Transit System (MTS) is seeking a Senior Accountant to join our team. Under the direction of the Controller, the Senior Accountant is responsible for providing accurate and timely accounting and financial reporting, and provides guidance to Finance team members.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:
Responsible for the accurate and timely maintenance of the general ledger, including developing support schedules, entering journal entries and account analysis and reconciliation on a monthly basis.
Assists Controller and Accounting Manager in preparing the Comprehensive Annual Financial Report (CAFR).
Acts as a Purchase-Card (P-Card) Administrator.
Files quarterly and annual state returns.
Works closely with the capital assets and grants team for accurate fixed asset reporting.
Prepares a significant number of high-level support schedules in preparation for annual audits, including regular maintenance, as well as more numerous and detailed year-end support schedules.
Acts as a liaison to external auditors by answering questions and providing requested information and documentation.
Prepares a variety of complex mandated reports, such as the National Transit Database reports, State Controller's report and Form C reports.
Oversees the accounting for the two San Diego Transit Health and Welfare Trust funds.
Prepares quarterly San Diego & Arizona Eastern financial reports.
Provides assistance to others in the department with accounting and financial reporting functions.

Provides assistance to the Controller on special projects as requested.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of or ability to learn MTS policies and regulations; ability to read, understand and apply MTS policies, regulations and union labor contracts; ability to write letters, memoranda and reports using clear, concise and grammatically correct English; ability to speak clearly, distinctly and effectively in person-to-person or small group situations using tact and diplomacy; ability to coordinate and initiate actions necessary to implement decisions and delegate responsibilities to appropriate personnel; ability to establish and maintain priorities in order to complete assignments by deadlines without detailed instructions; skill in verifying the accuracy and completeness of forms and reports; knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel and the ability to learn and use other software that MTS might have or acquire; an excellent knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles, including the requirements of governmental financial reporting.
The successful candidate must be able to fulfill the physical demands of the job such as walking, stooping, sitting, bending, reaching for overhead files and occasional lifting (must be able to lift up to 15 pounds). Must be able operate a motor vehicle and to perform tasks involving manual dexterity, such as use of a computer and 10-key. Work will at times require more than 8 hours per day or irregular hours to perform the essential duties of the position. Duties will be performed primarily in an office type environment. May require travel to external agencies.
The successful candidate must possess a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in accounting, as well as a minimum of three years of experience that demonstrates substantial knowledge and the ability to perform the specific job functions. CPA certification and experience in governmental accounting are strongly preferred. Must possess and maintain a valid California driver's license.
