About Our Job

The Denver Fire Department is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Senior Accountant. This position performs full-performance level, professional, governmental accounting work supporting the Department's Wildland Firefighting Program.

This position is located at: 745 W Colfax Ave, Denver CO 80204

The daily start time is flexible, and this will be a hybrid schedule of 3 days in the office and 2 day at home once trained.

Established in 1866, the Denver Fire Department (DFD) provides services to the citizens who live, work, and visit the City and County of Denver providing fire suppression, emergency medical services, technical rescue, hazardous materials response, water and high angle rescue. The Department's operating budget for 2024 is approximately $211 million. The Department consists of six divisions: Administration and Investigations, Fire Prevention Bureau, Technical Services, Safety and Training, Suppression (Operations), and Airport Fire and Rescue. The department currently has approximately 1,111 paid firefighters supporting daily fire/rescue and medical operations and 51 civilian support personnel. There are 39 fully staffed firehouses providing fire and emergency services within the City and surrounding communities of the City of Glendale, City of Sheridan, City of Englewood, and the Skyline Fire District. The Department also has five fully staffed firehouses located at Denver International Airport.

Job responsibilities include:

  • Reports directly to the Accounting Supervisor.

  • Tracks, reviews, and processes Wildland deployment billing and reimbursements.

  • Processes and reconciles Wildland deployment overtime and payroll entries.

  • Processes and reconciles all Wildland travel reimbursements in accordance to the City and County of Denver's fiscal rules along with the State of Colorado - Division of Fire Prevention and Control guidelines.

  • Runs daily, weekly, and monthly reconciliations of all revenue generated by the Wildland Billing Program.

  • Prepares various financial reports for management review.

  • Creates, organizes, and maintains database and spreadsheet programs. Collects, and retrieves data to identify financial discrepancies and reports to Accounting or Operational Supervisor accordingly

  • Perform back-up functions for other Fire Department Finance duties.

About You

Our ideal candidate will have:

  • Five years of professional accounting experience, including general ledger reconciliation

  • Two years or more of governmental or non-profit accounting experience

  • Working knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principals

Below are the minimum requirements used to determine eligibility for this position:

  • Education requirement: Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business Administration.

  • Experience Requirement: Three (3) years of professional level accounting experience reconciling accounting discrepancies, analyzing expenditures, and preparing financial reports.

  • Education/Experience Equivalency: No substitution of experience for education is permitted.

  • Additional appropriate education may be substituted for experience requirements.

  • License/Certifications: None
