Job Description

The Senior Accountant is responsible for providing complex and technical accounting work in support of the financial accounting function. The position performs difficult analytical professional and administrative work related to preparing, maintaining, monitoring and evaluating complex financial records. The position also works with more complex accounting system operations including account structure, internal controls, and financial reporting. Does related work as required. Supervision is exercised over assigned professional and clerical staff. Work is performed under general supervision of the Assistant Controller and/or Controller.

Effective July 1, 2024 the hiring range for this position is from $76,044.80/year to $104,561.60/year based on experience.

Effective July 1, 2024 the full salary range for this position is $76,044.80/year to $133,078.40/year to provide opportunity for growth and development.

Examples of Duties

  • Supervises accounting functions, activities, and staff;

  • Plan, prioritize, assign, supervise, and review the work of assigned staff; conducts performance reviews for staff;

  • Prepares or approves various monthly accounting entries, analyses, and reconciliations;

  • Identifies, analyzes, researches, and resolves accounting issues associated with accounts payable transactions such as purchase orders, or any invoice discrepancies; resolves vendor disputes; coordinates with vendors to improve or streamline operations;

  • Assists with the design, implementation, or enhancement of the County's financial systems to address frequent changes in requirements, meet specific needs or concerns, or create greater efficiencies;

  • Assists with the monthly and annual financial close to include conversion of all records to full accrual in preparation of financial reporting;

  • Assists with the preparation of the County's Annual Comprehensive Financial Report (ACFR) and various other financial statements, records, and reports;

  • Participates in providing documentation in support of the annual audit of the County by its external auditors;

  • Provides explanations, instructions and expert advice to others regarding technical and operational matters of the work; ensures that others understand such matters and act appropriately on such information;

  • Reviews current accounting processes and procedures and recommends improvements;

  • Performs accounting and financial studies and presents results;

  • Keeps abreast of new developments in the field;

  • Plans and develops research projects as needed;

  • Performs other related duties as required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of governmental accounting policies, procedures, and operations;

  • Knowledge of internal financial control requirements;

  • Knowledge of techniques used to locate errors in accounting records;

  • General knowledge of modern office practices and equipment;

  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills;

  • Skill in developing, modifying, and implementing accounting systems and policies;

  • Skill in reviewing accounting transactions to insure conformance with generally accepted accounting principles;

  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office-Excel for data analysis, accounting reconciliations, and other finance functions;

  • Ability to supervise, guide, and evaluate the work of supportive staff;

  • Ability to maintain high degree of professionalism when dealing with sensitive or confidential information;

  • Ability to prepare, interpret, and analyze financial records and reports;

  • Ability to adapt to changing priorities and deadlines;

  • Ability to communicate effectively, both vocally and in writing to a broad range of audiences;

  • Demonstrated ability to maintain tracking and reporting systems using spreadsheets, databases, and other software;

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with other employees, supervisors, County officials, and outside resources.

Education and Experience

Any combination of education and experience equivalent to a Bachelor's degree in Accounting or related field, and 4 years of direct work experience with complex accounting, including demonstrated lead experience.

Virginia Government Finance Officers' Association (VGFOA) Certification and experience in municipal accounting is preferred.
