Great Western Trailer (GWT) is immediately hiring Semi-Trailer Mechanics to service semi-trailers in our Salt Lake City, UT location. As a Semi-Trailer Mechanic, you will install, repair, replace, and inspect semi-trailers in accordance with Department of Transportation regulations and safety policies. Semi-Trailer Mechanics can expect any of the following responsibilities:

Inspect and repair:

  • Air brake lines, couplers, tanks, valves, shoes, drums, pads and rotors; services, low voltage wiring connections, harnesses, lights, batteries, and charging systems.

  • Body and chassis rails, side-sheets, caps, doors, retainers, decking, floors and plates for damage or defect.

  • Lift gate (lubricate and repair), minor mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic assemblies.

  • Wreck damage on all components of the trailer.

  • Basic and comprehensive repair and fabrication on equipment and components; arc welding, air arc, gas welding, and cutting.

  • Replaces components where necessary or other duties as assigned.

Install or replace:

  • Add-on components and accessories like dunnage racks, toolboxes, ramp kits, nosecones, wenches and more.

  • Demonstrates willingness to learn new skills and job functions.

Quality check and reporting:

  • Prepares service reports and any other necessary paperwork.

  • Examines workpieces for defects to ensure conformance with specifications.

  • Ability to follow logical troubleshooting procedures, manufacturer and company installation and service guidelines to ensure quality work.

  • Communicates needs or concerns in a timely manner in addition to assisting others as needed.

Demonstrate safety at all times:

  • Adheres to contamination control and HAZMAT rules and regulations.

  • Follows company safety policies and procedures and complies with safety standards.

  • Maintains all company equipment, tools, and work areas in a good, clean, and working order.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Valid driver's license and reliable form of transportation.

  • Owns personal set of hand tools.

  • Broad knowledge of semi-trailer equipment and tools, including their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance; current computer software, related hardware, and machine electronic systems.

  • Ability to operate hand tools, power tools, pneumatic tools, and equipment used in fabrication and welding; make precisely coordinated movements of the fingers of one or both hands in order to grasp, manipulate, or assemble very small objects.

  • Ability to work overtime as needed.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Minimum 3 years of experience in semi-trailer repairs.

  • ASE or other industry-recognized certifications helpful; welding certification.

  • Bilingual Spanish a plus.

PHYSICAL DEMAND

Regularly is required to sit. Specific vision abilities requirements include close vision, distance vision, color vision, and ability to adjust focus. Must operate equipment such as phone, computer, fork truck, yard goat, hand tools, welding equipment and refrigerated trailers.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Exposure to working near moving mechanical parts, in high precarious places, with toxic or caustic chemicals; fumes or airborne particles, extremes in temperature and environmental conditions. Usually moderate to loud noise levels. Potential risk of electrical shock. May work in a shop or yard or out of a mobile service vehicle.
