To assist maintenance repairers, construction crews, office personnel and crew leaders as required. To be able to operate all specialty tools used in the daily operation of the water/wastewater systems in repairs, maintenance, and installation.

  • Install and make repairs to water and sewer mains.

  • Keep trucks and equipment stocked and in good working condition.

  • Must have basic skills in concrete, asphalt, carpentry to build forms, installation of manholes, piers at creek crossings, landscaping, plumbing and sprinkler system repairs.

  • Work requires being onsite.

  • Working conditions may also include extreme cold and heat, temperature changes, humidity, heights, vibration, wetness, dryness, confined spaces, noise of 80-dB or higher, fumes, mists, gases, dust, caustics, chemicals, allergens, detergents, mechanical hazards, moving objects, and exposure to burns.

  • Other duties as assigned.

NEEDED SKILLS:

  • Must be able to install D.I., PVC, C.I. and clay pipe and their appurtenances.

  • Must be able to set meters, meter boxes, and run water services from main to property.

  • Must be able to install and repair fire hydrants.

  • Must be able to install, repair, and replace water valves and set paving boxes.

  • Must have basic skills required to use a backhoe, loader, and forklift to load trucks and materials.

  • Must be able to read, write, and understand the English language.

  • Must be able to read tape measure; add, subtract, and multiply.

  • Must be able to work safely without injury to self and others.

  • Must be able to run power equipment including gas powered compaction packers, gas powered cut-off saws, hydraulic saws, hydraulic jack hammers, hydraulic pumps, air tools, jack hammers, impact wrenches, concrete saws and must be familiar with water and sewer tapping machines, two way radios, basic hand tools and specialty power tools.

  • Must be able to safely drive a ½-ton truck, and operate a forklift as needed.

  • Must be able to train in all aspects of use daily tasks and in the use of hand and power tools, traffic control devices, concrete, asphalt and carpentry work.

  • Must be available to work rotating on-call every third week, including nights, weekends and holidays.

  • Must have reliable transportation and a telephone and be close enough to Tyler to respond within 20-minutes of receiving a call.

  • Must be able to stand up to 5-hours daily; sit 3-hours daily; bend 2-hours daily; stoop, twist, turn, walk, climb, crouch, crawl, run, kneel and balance up to 1-hour daily.

Education and Experience: Must have a minimum of eighth grade education. High School diploma or GED preferred. Must have at least one (1) year of experience in maintenance; prefer experience in water/wastewater maintenance and installation of services. Experience using hand tools, small tools, concrete saws and tapping machines is a plus. Must possess a valid Texas Class "C" driver's license with a clear driving record.

The City of Tyler will accept two years of relevant experience in place of each year of college required in the job description. Four years of relevant experience will be considered in place of an Associate's Degree, and eight years of relevant experience will be considered in place of a Bachelor's Degree. Any experience required in the Minimum qualifications is in addition to years of experience substituted for a degree.
