Seed Orchard Technician III
HS/GED Degree OR Minimum of 10 year(s) of experience in related field.
Must possess a valid driver's license, and the ability to work
independently, operate a variety of large and small equipment, e.g. cone kiln,
seed cleaner, seed gravity table, tractor, forklift, bucket truck and soil
Must possess knowledge of tree seed orchard management, mowing orchards,
seed extractor and cone processing operations, pesticide and use and regulations
specific to seed orchards, soil testing protocols, forest health issues specific
to see orchards, and seed bank operations. Must have skills in tree forest
health monitoring and surveillance.

This individual is skilled in the technical aspects of tree seed orchard
management and cone/seed handling. This person performs duties covering
management and operation of seed orchards, cone and see processing operation in
seed extractory, and maintenance of R8 seed bank. Duties include but are not
limited to: performing field activities such as mowing, tree planting, tree
pruning, tree felling and removal, herbicide spraying, tagging trees, and field
inspections of trees, soil sampling/nutrient analysis, forest health
inspections, tree grafting, planting and measurements, operating cone and seed
processing equipment, and maintaining seed bank to ensure the production of high
quality pine seed for reforestation and conservation purposes.
Performs field activities in seed orchards, including mowing, tree planting,
tree pruning, tree felling and removal, herbicide spraying, tagging trees, field
inspections of trees using a variety of field equipment, such as farm tractors,
tractor attachments, bucket trucks, tree tag machines, and soil augers. Performs
standard operations for processing cones in seed extractory, working with cone
tumbler, cone kilns, seed gravity table, see X-ray machine. Performs standard
operations in R8 seed bank. Collects foliar and soil samples, submits for
laboratory analysis. Under the direction of the Seed Orchard Manager and
Regional Geneticist, collect cones, collects scion, grafts new trees, plants new
seed orchard material. Collects data on test trees, orchard trees and cone
crops. Monitors for insect, animal and disease damage, coordinates treatment
options under the direction of the Seed Orchard Manager and Regional experts and
carries out treatment necessary to protect the project; this may include
spraying chemicals, baiting, trapping and the use of granular pesticides.
Mentors and trains personnel in seed orchard and seed extractor tasks
including operation of large and small equipment and tools. 20%
