Required Qualifications: Per Civil Service Standards and Specifications.

Must have taken and passed the specific job related Civil Service exam and be reachable on the appropriate Civil Service list. The Civil Service list for this position might provide insufficient acceptors, therefore, a provisional appointment may be made. Any provisional appointee will be required to take, pass and be reachable on the next Civil Service examination to be permanently appointed.

Must have served one year of permanent service in the Security Services Assistant I title to qualify. Must meet physical and medical requirements as determined by the Director of Health Services of the Department of Civil Service. A thorough character investigation will be made by University Police.

Must have, keep and maintain the appropriate valid NYS Driver's License; have a motor vehicle record which is free from major violations or a pattern of repeat violations. (*Out-of-State Applicants, see "Special Notes"). Must possess and maintain a current security guard photo ID issued by NYS Department of State. Must be able to perform mandatory overtime.

Brief Description of Duties: The Security Services Assistant 2 supervises and coordinates the activities of Security Services Assistant I with duties to include the following:

  • Instruct subordinates in security and safety techniques.

  • Communicate with staff and visitors regarding facility information and security operations.

  • Write basic reports of activities and incidents.

  • Determine patrol assignment.

  • Respond to emergency calls and direct subordinates.

  • Conduct pre-shift briefing and inspection.

  • Review time sheets, prepare evaluations and recommendations for disciplinary action.

  • Resolve minor conflicts/disagreements between clients and visitors; report security incidents to higher level security staff or agency management according to procedure.

  • Other duties as assigned as appropriate to departmental rank and mission.

Special Notes: This is a full-time position, 40 hours per week, shift and pass days varied.

Night and weekend work required. FLSA Nonexempt position, eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Internal and external search to occur simultaneously. Mandatory rehire roster candidates have preference.

Essential Position: This has been designated as an essential position based on the duties of the job and the functions performed. Positions that are designated as such are required to report to work/remain at work even if classes are cancelled, and the campus is working on limited operations in an emergency.

Patient Contact: Prior to start date, the selected candidate must meet the following requirements: Successfully complete pre-employment physical examination and obtain medical clearance from Stony Brook University's Employee Health Services (The hiring department will be responsible for any fee incurred for examination), clear a background investigation, submit (3) written reference, and provide a copy of any required New York State license(s)/certificate(s). Please be advised that failure to comply with any of the above requirements could result in a delayed start date and/or revocation of the employment offer.

  • Out-of-State Applicants: Please note as a condition of employment and in order for this position to be tendered, the successful incumbent will be required to provide evidence of a valid license and driving abstract from the state issuing the license within five business days of a conditional offer and must obtain a NYS driver's license within 30 days of official start date.
