The Virginia Alcoholic Beverage Control Authority (ABC) is seeking qualified applicants for a Security Sergeant position. The Security Sergeant is responsible for a wide range of administrative and security duties including the first line supervision of the day-to-day duties of security officers ensuring seven (7) day a week / twenty-four (24) hour protection of authority employees, visitors, customers and property. Ensuring the efficient flow of authority employees, non-authority personnel and customers while conducting business within the Headquarters and Distribution Center Complex including: access controls relating to the ingress and egress of personnel, vehicles and packages; security patrols; maintenance checks of the facility security, fire and operational systems; investigation of safety and security issues, alarms and breaches of security; and upon request provides assistance to local law enforcement and fire officials. Security officers are subject to work any shift assignment.

Responsibilities

• Provides first line supervision of the day-to-day duties of security personnel to ensure a safe and secure environment for authority employees, visitors and customers.
• Supervises and verifies tasks conducted by security personnel including: patrols; inspections of security and fire related equipment and systems; heat and air conditioning systems; electrical and diesel pumping equipment; and, perimeter and interior illumination in accordance with policy and procedures to ensure functional operability.
• Supervises the documentation of patrols and inspections to ensure clear and concise reporting; monitors notification to appropriate personnel to ensure corrective action of safety, security and operational problems and/or deficiencies.
• Supervises access controls; the enforcement of parking regulations; inspections of locking mechanisms, and verifies the documentation utilized by security personnel to ensure only authorized persons and vehicles are permitted entry to authority property.
• Reports irregularities in a timely manner to appropriate personnel for corrective action.
• Reviews and evaluates security shift operations to determine security requirements and make appropriate recommendations to security management or other appropriate supervision.
• Supervises, coordinates and monitors hands-on training of security personnel to ensure all aspects of shift assignments are properly carried out in a professional and appropriate manner.
• Assists with the day-to-day operation of the security shift supervision.

Minimum Qualifications

• Must be at least 21 years of age
• Valid Virginia driver's license required.
• Applicants must have comprehensive knowledge of security and safety concepts, security principles and practices; and fire prevention and protection procedures.
• Skilled in use of operating a multi-line telephone system security equipment, personal computer and software applications including Microsoft applications; electronic fire and security alarm systems and equipment; operation of motor vehicles; and skills in proper response techniques to emergency situations.
• Applicants must have working knowledge relating to security assessments and evaluations; principles and practices of supervision; and state and federal laws and regulations pertaining to security.
• Applicants must have knowledge and experience pertaining to maintenance of security and fire alarm equipment, personal computer and software applications;; first aid and operation of motor vehicles.
• Must be available to work any one of three required shifts including weekends and holidays.
• Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing and resolve problems and make sound decisions in emergency and adverse situations; and build consensus with authority, Bureau of Law Enforcement and Security Division, outside agency personnel and the public.
• Must be able to perform the essential duties of the position which may require extended periods of standing or sitting.

Preferred Qualifications

• High school education or the equivalent.
• Supervisory or lead experience in law enforcement or security management, or the equivalent combination of experience and education in either or both professions.
• Department of Criminal Justice Services certification standards for Security Officer.
