About Security Sciences

Security Sciences provides highly functional, available, trusted solutions that prevent, detect, respond, and recover from cyber threats. Our Software Engineering team develops, constructs, tests, and maintains the software architecture necessary for big data analytics. Our Security Architecture team designs and implements highly defensible security infrastructure on behalf of NYC government agencies. Our Service Delivery team is responsible for providing OTI / NYC Cyber Command with IT infrastructure support and IT help desk services. Finally, our Cyber Programs team leads Security Sciences data protection and identity & access management (IAM) initiatives.

About the Position

NYC3's Security Sciences Division is seeking a motivated College Aide to support the Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) team. Our division has designed a cloud-platform to ingest, normalize, correlate, analyze, and present cybersecurity relevant data from across the City to support threat management activities. The SRE team is responsible for ensuring the availability, latency, performance, efficiency, change management, monitoring, emergency response, and capacity planning of the data pipeline as well as associated services and platforms.

Under the supervision of the SRE Director, you will help develop and maintain a secure, scalable, and cloud-native data processing framework that supports OTI / NYC Cyber Command's cybersecurity mission.

Duties and activities of this position may include:

  • Assist Cloud Reliability Engineers with the development and implementation of performance improvements across services and platforms

  • Support incident management, service-level management, change management, release management, continuity management, and availability management for databases and data management systems

  • Support the Data Science team in maintaining and improving the data pipeline using Apache Beam, Java, Python, and other data processing technologies

  • Maintain information exchanges through publish, subscribe, and alert functions that enable users to send and receive critical information as required;

  • Assist with the administration of databases and/or data management systems that allow for the secure storage, query, protection, and utilization of data.

Minimum Qualifications

For Assignment Level I:

Matriculation at an accredited college or graduate school. Employment is conditioned upon continuance as a student in a college or graduate school.

For Assignment Level II (Information Technology):

Matriculation at an accredited college or graduate school. Employment is conditioned upon continuance as a student in a college or graduate school with a specific course of study in information technology, computer science, management information systems, data processing, or closely related field, including or supplemented by 9 semester credits in an acceptable course of study.

For Assignment Level III (Information Technology Fellow):

Matriculation at an accredited college or graduate school. Employment is conditioned upon continuance as a student in a college or graduate school with a specific course of study in information technology, computer science, management information systems, data processing, or other area relevant to the information technology project(s) assigned, including or supplemented by 9 semester credits in an acceptable course of study. Appointments to this Assignment Level will be made by the Technology Steering Committee through the Department of Information Technology and Telecommunications.

SPECIAL NOTE

Maximum tenure for all Assignment Levels in the title of College Aide is 6 years. No student shall be employed more than half-time in any week in which classes in which the student is enrolled are in session. Students may be employed full-time during their vacation periods.

Preferred Skills

The preferred candidate should possess the following: - Pursuing a degree or coursework in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Data Analytics, Information Technology, Information Systems, Cybersecurity, or similar area.

  • Experience with object-oriented/object function scripting languages, preferably Java or Python

  • Familiarity with or exposure to cloud application development is a plus

  • Familiarity with distributed data processing frameworks is a plus

  • Self-motivated with a commitment to learning and continuous improvement.

  • Familiarity with GCP, Azure and AWS Cloud environments.

  • Strong team player who can build strong, cross-functional team relationships and collaborate effectively

  • Ability to document processes, procedures, and design.

Residency Requirement

New York City residency is generally required within 90 days of appointment. However, City Employees in certain titles who have worked for the City for 2 continuous years may also be eligible to reside in Nassau, Suffolk, Putnam, Westchester, Rockland, or Orange County. To determine if the residency requirement applies to you, please discuss with the agency representative at the time of interview.
