Silas Deane Middle School has an opening for a Security Officer to be filled for the start of the 2024-2025 academic year.

Position: Security Officer

School: Silas Deane Middle School

Reports To: Director of Security and Principal

Start Date: August 27, 2024 (start of the 2024-2025 school year)

Compensation: $24.16 per hour worked

Work Year: 184 days

Hours: 7 hours/day; exclusive of unpaid lunch break (35 hours per week), approximately 7:30am

  • 3:00pm

Silas Deane Middle School is seeking a motivated and dedicated professional to serve as a Security Officer to fill an immediate opening. This position is vital to our school as the incumbent has regular and constant interaction with our staff, students, parents/families, Board of Education, town leadership, and the community at-large. The Security Officer at the middle school is a visible and active figure in our school who deals with matters that require intervention of security personnel or town law enforcement.

Duties of the position include the following:

  • Responsible for patrolling our school building, property grounds and parking areas regularly throughout the day in order to maintain a safe, secure and healthy school environment;

  • Maintains a presence whenever large groups of students are gathered for activities, which may include assemblies, lunch periods, pep rallies, concerts, athletic events, academic events and the like that fall within the normal school day;

  • Responsible for maintaining detailed documented records of any incidents or matters that require intervention;

  • Work collaboratively with students and staff while also holding others accountable for their actions and keep people and property safe throughout the school day;

  • Monitor all students and guests entering/leaving the building, checking for required identification prior to gaining access to our building;

  • Monitor student presence in hallways during class periods;

  • Ensure guests to the building are escorted to their destination as required by school policy;

  • Hold students accountable for behaving in a proper and respectful manner; report matters that require intervention and follow-up;

  • Monitor student and staff parking, checking for proper registration and ensuring parking occurs consistent with parking guidelines;

  • Monitor traffic flow during busy times of school day as necessary;

  • Other duties as assigned by supervision.

Qualifications:

  • Must possess a minimum of a high school diploma; preference may be given to those who have an Associate's Degree (or greater) in law enforcement, criminal justice or a related field of study;

  • Must possess a minimum of three (3) years of experience in a law enforcement or security role in a public sector environment; preference will be given to those who have such experience in a school setting;

  • Demonstrated experience writing detailed incident reports;

  • Strong judgment skills that support making quick assessments and taking quick action to prevent matters from escalating;

  • Excellent oral communication and interpersonal skills;

  • Adaptability to work cooperatively with members of the staff, students, families, community members, and the general public in a fast-paced and dynamic environment;

  • Demonstrated experience working independently and under general direction.
