BASIC FUNCTION:

Under the direction of the assigned campus Administrator or a Security Operations Supervisor, perform a variety of duties related to protecting the students, personnel, facilities and grounds of an assigned area or location; patrol campus buildings and grounds on foot or in a District vehicle and report security violations and incidents during assigned day, swing or midnight shift.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:

The Security Officer classification is responsible for performing a variety of duties related to protecting the students, personnel, facilities and grounds of an assigned area or location. The Senior Security Officer organizes and schedules the assignments of Security Officers for an assigned District area. Incumbents train new security personnel and participate in security duties such as patrolling campus buildings and grounds.

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:

Patrol an assigned area or District location on the day, swing or midnight shift; conduct foot and vehicular patrols as assigned.

Patrol assigned areas, buildings and facilities to assure that District property is secure and safe from fire, theft, vandalism and other unlawful acts.

Detect, report or correct unsecured areas and buildings; report theft, vandalism and criminal activities; suppress disturbances and security incidents according to established guidelines and procedures.

Lock, unlock, open and check doors, windows, gates and other entrance and exit accesses to District buildings, properties and facilities; set, reset and disarm alarms as needed.

Respond to calls from schools and provide backup assistance to stationary officers as needed; contact local law enforcement officials to report burglaries and other unlawful activities; detain suspects as appropriate.

Respond to emergency situations and take appropriate action in accordance with established guidelines; provide basic first aid services as needed.

Observe and control students in halls, at lunch and during other non-classroom activities; assure students possess appropriate permits or permission when leaving campus; identify and pick up truant students; observe and question unauthorized persons on campus.

Communicate with District personnel, campus administrators, students, parents and others regarding security related concerns and issues.

Operate a patrol vehicle and two-way radio; observe safe and defensive driving practices; fill and service assigned District vehicle.

Maintain a variety of records related to field activities and prepare incident reports in accordance with established guidelines.

OTHER DUTIES:

Provide information, directions and other assistance to visitors as needed.

Perform related duties as assigned.

INITIAL QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Graduation from high school or equivalent and one (1) year of security-related experience involving contact with the public.

LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

  • Valid California Class C driver's license.

  • Successful completion of SB 1626 training and certification, which has been approved by the Department of Consumer Affairs Bureau of Security and Investigative Services (BSIS) and the Commission on Peace Officers Standards and Training (POST), including anyone employed on or after July 1, 2000.

  • First Aid certificate and CPR card issued by an authorized agency.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND WORKING CONDITIONS:

General investigative and law enforcement practices.

Crowd and traffic control techniques.

City, State and County ordinances related to theft, arson, vandalism, malicious mischief and trespassing.

Sections of the Education Code regarding truancy and security-related issues.

ABILITY TO:

Conduct foot and vehicular patrols of District grounds and locations during an assigned shift.

Operate a motor vehicle safely and defensively and use a two-way radio.

Evaluate security incidents and take appropriate action according to established guidelines.

Observe, detect and deter improper behavior and unlawful activities.

Utilize crowd and traffic control techniques.

Respond to disturbances and emergency situations calmly and rationally.

Maintain records and prepare reports.

Understand and work within scope of authority.

Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others.

Provide limited First Aid services as needed.
