Security Officer I

The City of Chesapeake Public Works Department, Facility Maintenance Division is currently accepting applications for one (1) full-time Security Officer I position.

The Facility Maintenance Division is recruiting for an experienced Security Guard with excellent customer service skills, keen observation skills, and is passionate about the responsibilities of a Security Guard. Do you enjoy being around people? In this position, you will be responsible for surveillance of the City Hall premises and the protection of our staff and visitors, as well as detecting any suspicious happenings and preventing vandalism, thefts and any other criminal behavior.

Typical daily duties include:

Provides daily unarmed security at City Hall. This primarily consists of being stationed in the 1st Floor Lobby to observe and control the security environment, monitor all visitors who enter the lobby, and generally maintain awareness of what is going on in the lobby and the rest of the building.

This includes coordinating with the assigned Police Officer and Information Desk to provide a safe and customer-oriented atmosphere in the lobby. The position also provides regular patrols on all floors of the building, to include checking outside the 1st Floor entrances. Keeps Facility Maintenance Coordinator and City Manager's Office fully apprised of security status of City Hall and any events/occurrences that affect security.

Required Qualifications

VOCATIONAL/EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENT: Requires high school diploma or GED and any combination of education and experience equivalent to satisfactory completion of one year of college education.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: In addition to satisfying the vocational/educational standard, this class requires a minimum of three months of related, full-time equivalent experience.

SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES: May be required to be certified by the Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS), depending on assignment. Depending on operational needs, may require a valid driver's license and a driving record in compliance with City Driving Standards.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies.
