The mission of Georgetown University Police Department (GUPD) is to protect the Georgetown University community, ensuring a safe and secure learning and living environment through trusting partnerships and professional police services. Our officers are commissioned special police, vested through the District of Columbia Metropolitan Police Department.

Job Overview

The Security Officer maintains the integrity of assigned buildings or areas by understanding access control systems, circulation and safety systems, and emergency exits in event of an emergency. Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Maintains awareness and understanding of all special and general orders pertaining to area, building, and functions of job

  • Inspects and reports security and safety of area or building

  • Reports all deficiencies to supervisor

  • Maintains consistent knowledge of traffic flow

  • Recognizes unusual incidents or unwarranted intrusion and effects prompt and proper requests for assistance when required

  • Utilizes communications available for reporting purposes

  • Performs other duties as assigned

Work Interactions

Reporting to the Police Sergeant, the Security Officer works independently with general supervision. They work with other patrol officers, communications officers, security officers, and student guards; interact routinely with students, faculty, staff, visitors, and the neighboring community; and serve as one of the "faces" of the Georgetown University Police Department.

Qualifications

  • High School diploma or equivalency

  • At least 1 year of general work experience - preference for 1 year of security, law enforcement or military experience - note: an equivalent combination of training and experience may be considered in lieu of cited education and work experience

  • At least 18 years of age

  • Possession and maintenance of a valid driver's license with no violations in the last three years

  • Ability to pass Georgetown University's driver's certification

  • Ability to qualify for a Security Officer License in the District of Columbia

  • Successful completion of a written test, report writing test, drug test, physical examination by a medical doctor to University specifications, and extensive psychological testing

  • Successful completion of a post-offer comprehensive background investigation

  • Basic computer skills, including word processing - preference for additional administrative and clerical skills

  • Ability to employ tact, patience, and a professional and courteous demeanor in order to deal successfully with students, staff, faculty, visitors, and community members.

  • Ability to exhibit respect for the use of services in relation to a University environment

  • Good verbal and written communications skills, including report writing

Working Conditions and Physical Demands:

  • Frequently required to move up to 25 pounds of weight and walk or stand with operation of controls

  • Occasionally tasked with moving items weighing up to 50 pounds of weight

Essential: The Security Officer is designated as Essential under the University Personnel policy guidelines and therefore is subject to be on-call when necessary. They must be willing and available to work extended, odd, or off hours to achieve the expectations and requirements of the Department - to include rotating tours of duty (day shifts, evening shifts, overnight shifts) with fluctuating days off.
