Position Title: School Security Officer

Reports to: Dean of Students / School Director

Terms of Employment: 10 month, salary and benefits established by Civitas Education Partners

Position Summary:

Informed by the mission of the school, the Security Officer will be responsible for patrolling the school building and grounds, enforcing school rules, ensuring the safety of students, staff and visitors and preventing damage to school facilities. The Security Officer is expected to establish a rapport with students in order to provide an atmosphere that is safe and conducive to the proper functioning of the school; and to assist students or refer them to proper staff members for assistance with any problems. Work requires the exercise of independent judgment and is performed under the general supervision of the building School Director. Does related work as required.

School Security Officer will be responsible for:

  • Patrolling all areas of school buildings and grounds including halls, stairwells, rest rooms, courtyards, entrances and parking lots to prevent trespassing, loitering, and class cutting, and to protect persons and property, maintain order, and assure compliance with all rules and regulations;

  • Assisting students with problems and refers them to proper staff members;

  • Questioning unauthorized persons on or around school premises, advises as to school rules, and either directs visitors to the principal's office, or off school property;

  • Restraining persons engaged in disorderly conduct;

  • Reporting to the building administrators, any problems, incidents, and conditions affecting the security of the school buildings and grounds so that the building administration can contact the police if necessary;

  • Assisting police in calming disturbances if necessary;

  • Assisting when emergencies occur within the school building;

  • Watching for illegal drug use and accompanies school administrators on locker searches for illegal artifacts

  • Other duties as assigned.

Job Qualification:

A high school diploma is required; minimum of two years working in an urban school setting.

Good knowledge of laws, rules and regulations applicable to school management and necessary for promoting and maintaining proper conduct, and ensuring the safety of students, staff and visitors; good knowledge of crisis intervention and conflict resolution techniques; ability to identify illegal drugs and detect signs of use; ability to defuse potentially dangerous situations; ability to follow directions; ability to develop a rapport with students; ability to explain rules and regulations in a way that will be understood and obeyed; tact; good judgment; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

Supervises: None # PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:## Performs security related activities as assigned to ensure a safe environment inside the hospital building and outside on the hospital campus.# Responds to emergency situations or security threats in a professional manner, following established procedures. Participates in investigations of security incidents.# Patrols the facility and campus at designated intervals to maintain order and prevent crime. Reports and documents any conditions that might constitute a security or safety hazard. Documentation is accurate, complete, and timely.# Assures that offices and departments are secure when vacant. Reports unsafe conditions as well as policy infractions, takes appropriate actions to resolve issues. Monitors video management system and takes appropriate actions to respond to any potential threats or unsafe incidents. Monitors door access control system and hospital lock-out system for breaches. Ensures systems are in good working order at all times. Escorts employees and visitors throughout the campus and parking lots as required and requested. Requests support of area law enforcement agencies when required. Cooperates fully with area law enforcement when present. Provides a visible presence within facility. Monitors parking lot to ensure compliance with designated parking policies. Safely and courteously operates hospital vehicles, if needed. Relieves receptionist at front desk as assigned. Relief duties include visitor registration, transferring of calls, and annunciation of codes as needed. Maintains professional appearance which includes strict adherence to department uniform guidelines, including the issued vest, duty belt, and other equipment required to perform their job appropriately. Assists Office Services, Plant Operations, and EVS staff, if needed, which includes, but is not limited to, trash disposal and snow removal. Attends internal meetings and in-services and participates in mandatory reviews of policies and procedures.
