These are full-time positions (40 hours per week) with state benefits including retirement, health insurance, vacation leave, sick leave, and paid holidays. These positions are located in the Samarcand Training Academy in Moore County, Jackson Springs, NC. 

Rotating Shift and days, Sun-Sat, 1st , 2nd and 3rd shifts

About the position:

Samarcand Training Academy is the primary training facility within the Department of Public Safety and provides both in-residence and commuter, basic and advanced training courses for Special Agents of the North Carolina SBI and ALE, Troopers of the North Carolina Highway Patrol, members of the North Carolina National Guard, officers of Probation & Parole and Juvenile Justice, officers with the UNC System, and members of county and municipal law enforcement from across the state. Samarcand Training Academy currently consists of two campuses; the 460-acre main campus in Moore County, and the 113-acre satellite campus in Montgomery County which is the future home of the Center for Safer Schools. The main campus is made up of 22 buildings; housing, staff and instructor offices; a dining facility; a gymnasium; two (2) fitness centers; an auditorium; 13 classrooms; twelve (12) dormitories with 195 student and instructor beds; a Weapons Training Simulator; Firearms Training Center with two (2) live-fire ranges and range house; a physically challenging obstacle course, and a tactical training building. Center for Safer Schools satellite campus includes multiple classrooms and offices, a gymnasium, a cafeteria, a library, an admin building, a large auditorium, and several sports venues.  Staff members of Samarcand Training Academy serve both campuses.  This is protective, security and public contact work in the operation of the Samarcand Training Academy. Work involves the responsibility for monitoring assigned areas for possible violation of laws and regulations, and patrolling property to guard property against fire, safety hazards, damage and theft. It includes providing physical security through patrols of the interior and exterior of facilities, observing the activities of persons, using electronic security/ surveillance systems, and reporting unusual, suspect, or hazardous activities/situations. Duties would include ensuring the safety of the public, staff, students and others by enforcing rules of conduct; monitoring access to areas; controlling traffic of people and vehicles to prevent campus traffic or parking violations and other hazardous incidents; providing general information to the public regarding graduations, programs, special activities and/or directions; checking location and use of emergency alarms and equipment, executing the procedures to follow in the event of an emergency; and maintaining daily records and reports. Employee will perform related duties as required. Employee will operate within specified rules and regulations and receive work assignments from a higher-level supervisor.These Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities / Competencies, along with the Minimum Education and Experience Requirements, are REQUIRED to qualify for this position. Qualified applicants must document on the application that they possess ALL of the following:

  • Working knowledge of standard safety, surveillance, and security practices and equipment.

  • Working knowledge of the policies, rules, or regulations applicable to guarding property that is sufficient to recognize and report situations that may violate the policies, rules, or regulations.

  • Working knowledge of standard methods of reporting and handling emergencies such as disturbances, fires, medical and security threats.

  • Working knowledge of computers using Word and Outlook or other email systems.

MANAGEMENT PREFERENCES:

  • Ability to use security equipment (e.g. radios, switchboards/phones, flash lights, fire extinguishers, surveillance cameras, alarm panels, card access, or other electronic security systems).

  • Ability to patrol, monitor, and guard assigned area.

  • Ability to respond quickly and properly in emergency situations.

  • Ability to interact with co-workers, supervisors, and general public to provide assistance and relay information.

  • Ability to follow oral and written instruction.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Currently have a valid Unarmed Certification or Armed Firearms Training Certification or can obtain an Unarmed or Armed Firearms Training Certification from the NC Private Protective Services Board within 30 days of employment.

  • The selected candidate must be able to obtain certification with the Agency In-house weapon within 30 days of employment.

High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma;

or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

May require the ability to complete emergency medical technician (EMT) training and meet re-certification standards as required.
