Provides clerical/secretarial support which includes tasks such as composing and finalizing correspondence, establishing and maintaining filing systems, creating and maintaining databases, gathering and providing information, and recording fiscal activities to support office operations.

Successful candidate will have experience working directly with the public and others in a professional environment. Successful applicant should be able to readily adjust to changing situations, act with confidence, and complete work independently.

Knowledge of:

  • Business English including grammar, spelling, and punctuation;
  • modern office equipment, practices, and procedures;
  • basic bookkeeping;
  • computer software applications;
  • department rules, procedures, and functions.

Ability to:

  • type accurately, in positions requiring keyboarding;
  • gather, compare, and summarize data from a variety of sources;
  • operate a variety of office equipment;
  • communicate information clearly and concisely;
  • review and comprehend materials;
  • establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the general public;
  • proof and edit solutions to arithmetic problems involving addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and percentages;
  • formulate logical and reasonable conclusions from available information.

For the GS-5 level: Applicants must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least GS-4 grade level; OR a bachelor's degree or 4 years of successfully completed education above high school; OR a combination of successfully completed post-high school education (in excess of the first 60 semester hours) and specialized experience. The education must have been obtained in an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college or university.
