BACKGROUND CHECK
Eligible candidates under final consideration for appointment to positions identified as positions of trust will be required to complete authorization for a Criminal Background Check and/or Fingerprint screening and must be successfully completed.
SUMMARY OF POSITION
The Secretary must possess excellent organizational and multitasking abilities to efficiently manage the demands of the position. Key responsibilities include coordinating schedules, organizing meetings and events, and ensuring that all correspondence is appropriately handled and documented. The Secretary serves as a pivotal point of communication between the City Council members and their constituents, ensuring that inquiries are addressed promptly and accurately. The secretary reports directly to the district's chief of staff. Moreover, the role requires the ability to handle confidential information with discretion and professionalism. A successful Secretary will have a proactive approach to problem-solving, identifying potential issues before they escalate and proposing effective solutions. Strong interpersonal skills are essential, as the Secretary will frequently interact with a diverse range of individuals, including council members, city officials, and the public, fostering positive and productive relationships. Overall, this position is integral to the smooth operation of the City Council's activities, requiring a dedicated and detail-oriented individual committed to supporting the legislative process and enhancing the service provided to Baltimore's citizens.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
To be eligible, candidates must have either graduated from an accredited high school or obtained a GED certificate, along with four years of office support experience. This experience should encompass at least two years of secretarial responsibilities, which include managing appointment schedules, drafting correspondence, and organizing meetings and agendas.
Candidates must also have experience in effectively representing their principles. Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, are necessary to ensure clear and concise interactions with constituents, colleagues, and external stakeholders. A sharp attention to detail and the ability to juggle multiple tasks efficiently are crucial for success in this position. Proficiency in office software and tools, such as Microsoft 365, is essential for effectively managing daily administrative tasks. Candidates who are adaptable, proactive, and able to work independently while also being team oriented will excel in this dynamic and fast-paced environment.

ABOUT THE CITY COUNCIL
The City Council is the City's legislative body, with the power to enact all ordinances and resolutions. City Council members are elected from fourteen districts, and the President is elected at large, by all voters of the City. The fifteen City Council members, along with the Mayor, act only by ordinance, resolution, or motion. They adopt and may alter the annual budget and confirm the Mayor's appointments. The City Council is responsible for the appropriation and issuance of bonds. The City Council determines its own rules of procedure, and its meetings are open to the public. City Council members are elected every four years. They are elected to geographic districts of roughly the same proportion of population.
