Overview
The Defense Travel Management Office (DTMO) is seeking an experienced Technical Writer with at least 5 years of expertise in Microsoft Office products and familiarity with the Defense Travel System (DTS). This role involves creating clear, concise, and user-friendly documentation to support DTMO’s mission of streamlining and modernizing Department of Defense (DoD) travel operations.
As the DoD’s primary interface with the federal and private sector travel industry, DTMO manages commercial travel programs, travel policies, travel card programs, customer support, training, and oversight of DoD travel systems. The Technical Writer will play a key role in developing resources that enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of DoD travel programs.
Responsibilities
The Technical Writer will be responsible for creating and maintaining documentation that supports DTMO’s travel programs and systems, including:
Documentation Development
- Produce user manuals, training materials, policy documents, and other technical resources for DTS and related systems.
- Ensure all materials are accurate, clear, and aligned with DoD travel policies and standards.
Content Management
- Organize and maintain a centralized repository of technical documentation.
- Update existing documents to reflect changes in policies, systems, and processes.
Collaboration and Communication
- Work closely with subject matter experts (SMEs), system developers, and program managers to gather and translate complex technical information into user-friendly materials.
- Facilitate reviews and approvals of documentation with stakeholders across DTMO and DoD.
Quality Assurance
- Perform thorough editing and proofreading to ensure consistency, clarity, and compliance with DoD standards.
- Conduct usability testing to validate the effectiveness of documentation for end users.
Qualifications
Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in English, Communications, Technical Writing, or a related field.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in technical writing, with proficiency in Microsoft Office products.
Required Skills and Expertise
- Familiarity with the Defense Travel System (DTS) and DoD travel policies.
- Exceptional writing, editing, and formatting skills with a strong attention to detail.
- Ability to work collaboratively with cross-functional teams and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
- Experience in developing user-focused documentation for complex systems or processes.
Clearance Requirement
- Active Secret Clearance (or higher) required.
