The Role

This position is at the request of Naval Reactors and the UK Ministry of Defense for an assignment at BAE Systems (BAES) in Barrow-in-Furness, United Kingdom. The initial contract period will be two years, with the possibility of annual renewals thereafter.

This embedded consultant will be based at BAES within Secondary Propulsion Engineering to support the UK's submarine program. Knowledge transfer from US propulsion plant build and test will be essential, to further develop an independent and sustainable UK capability. The primary focus of this position is to help the Secondary Propulsion Engineering team complete their transition from the design phase to build/test, and to support Dreadnought class build and test.

Design studies for a future submarine class also are within the scope of this position. Responsibilities will include the mentoring/training of Engineering personnel, skills assessment and capability planning, problem prevention, deckplate and test support, root cause analysis and troubleshooting, technical dispositions, supplier oversight, configuration control, process improvement, design verification and validation, and oversight of operational and test procedures.

Ability to obtain a Secret Clearance is required.

Must Have

Bachelor's Degree and 9 years of relevant exempt experience;

Master's Degree in a technical engineering field and 7 years of relevant professional experience;

Ph.D. and 4 years of experience.

Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program.

Nice to Have

Understanding of VIRGINIA Class propulsion plant build sequence.

  • Prior team leadership or management roles.

  • Continuous Improvement experience as a Black Belt or Green Belt.

  • A strong background in applying lessons learned.

  • Experience working with a full range of personnel, including Upper Management, Program, Operations, Planning, Quality, NDE, Welding Engineering, Supply Chain, ILS, SHE, Special Emphasis, Legal, Finance/Contracts, and specialist engineering disciplines.

  • Experience with formal critiques of shipyard incidents.

  • Formal training in steam plant cleanliness requirements.

  • Experience providing engineering support through the build, commissioning, and in-service phases for multiple platforms.

  • Prior international program support experience.

Skills:

  • Ability to mentor multiple personnel at all levels and effectively transfer knowledge, in a teaming environment.

  • Strong leadership skills.

  • Strong oral/written communication skills and the ability to deliver messages tactfully to a range of US and UK stakeholders.

  • Ability to work independently in a challenging environment.

  • Ability to motivate others to seek improvements and change processes.
