Seasonal positions are assigned to the Department of Natural and Cultural Resources

  • NC Zoo in Asheboro

  • Randolph County. Position will work flexible schedules and hours based on business needs.

Primary Purpose of this Position:

The Zoo Transportation Branch provides transportation services to visitors, employees, and for special event functions. Transportation services include an intra-park transportation system and a parking lot shuttle service as well as specialty events and off-site transportation services for Society and/or Zoo events. Equipment includes specialty vehicles with trailing cars, pusher buses, and handicapped equipped buses and trams. The Transport Branch is required to provide timely, safe, efficient and effective transportation to the Zoo's 900,000+ guests per year as well as to guests invited to special events and/or affairs at the Zoo.

Seasonal positions work between 25 - 40 hours per week from February through November including holidays and weekends. Work hours are between the hours of 8:30 am

  • 6:30 pm and are based on the weather and guest attendance at the park. Under direct supervision, provides an outstanding guest experience while ensuring safe operation of the Zoo's Guest Transportation System and Vehicles. The successful candidates must be cooperative and work well with the public and staff, and be highly motivated, and once trained, be able to work with limited supervision.

Transportation Drivers can expect the following responsibilities:

  • Maintain a friendly and approachable attitude towards the guests, and staff at all times.

  • Drive a variety of multi passenger Buses or Trams, transporting guests and staff on Zoo property.

  • Responsible for attentive operation of assigned vehicle(s) in accordance with established safety protocols.

  • Provides guests with exceptional customer service, including but not limited to those outlined by department guidelines.

  • Provide crowd control and Guest Information at bus/shuttle stops.

  • Use of two-way radio communications.

  • Operate Sound Systems in Zoo's Guest Transportation System Vehicles.

  • Verbally communicate with guests when giving directions, explaining safety guidelines and assisting with wayfinding and guest questions.

  • Load and unloads strollers, manual and electric wheelchairs on and off Zoo's Guest Transportation System Vehicles.

  • Adhere to all company policies and procedures, including health & safety practices.

  • Complete all other duties as requested.

Job Requirements:

  • Must be at least 18 years of age with at least at least one year of driving with a permanent (non-provisional) driver's license.

  • Must be able to pass a pre-employment drug test and maintain free from drugs and/or alcohol. Random Drug testing is also conducted.

  • Requires the ability to lift up to 35 lbs. routinely and over 35 lbs. with assistance routinely to load/unload strollers, wheelchairs, scooters, etc.

  • Must comply NC Zoo Dress Code and Appearance Policy.

  • Must be willing and able to work varied and long shifts including holidays, weekends and in support of special events as needed.

  • Ability to work in extreme weather conditions typical to Central NC (i.e. heat, rain, or cold).

  • Must be able to tolerate exposure to, outdoor allergens, dust, fumes, odor, loud noises, motion, and vibrations.

  • Ability to use radio, telephone, and computer to communicate.

  • Must be able to follow written and verbal instructions.

  • Manual dexterity sufficient to safely enter and operate vehicles, and handle tools and equipment.

  • Must be able to perform essential duties and follow general safety practices.

  • Must be able to work in a variety of physical positions, including sitting, bending, reaching, standing, walking, lifting and carrying 30 lbs., and stand/walk/navigate on paved as well as rough or uneven pathways for extended periods of time.

High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
