Winter Seasonal Position Overview

  • Hourly Rate: $16.00 (reporting daily, 37.5 hours per week plus snow events)

  • Winter Seasonal positions are not eligible for Holiday Pay, Leave Pay or State Benefits, including unemployment.

  • Winter Seasonal positions work from: November 4, 2019 to March 30, 2020.

  • Open positions throughout our District- LaPorte, Gary, Plymouth, Renssalaer, and Monticello Sub Districts.

  • Candidates must be open to working nights, weekends, and on call.

About the Job:

This position is responsible for performing general highway maintenance duties that keep INDOT assets in good working condition to ensure customer satisfaction. Winter Seasonal workers perform snow and ice removal and related maintenance duties by operation of snow plow and other winter operations duties as required. Traffic maintenance duties such as repairing and installing traffic signs and pavement markings are also required job duties for this position. A CDL is required for this position.

A Day in the Life:

  • Complies with INDOT Safety Policies and Procedures;

  • Operates basic highway maintenance and traffic equipment to maintain, repair and clean highways and right-of-ways;

  • Moves and loads supplies and materials;

  • Winter operations duties including snow and ice removal;

  • Maintains, repairs, and installs traffic signs, route markers, and pavement markings;

  • Performs emergency response activities such as: clean-up, traffic control, lane closures, placement of signs, and erecting barricades;

  • Performs equipment maintenance such as: minor repairs, preventative maintenance, refueling, and pre-trip inspections;

  • Performs miscellaneous labor tasks;

  • Performs job documentation tasks such as entry into the Work Management System (WMS);

  • Provide assistance to public by responding to general inquiries, explaining delays, etc;

  • May perform basic construction inspection duties, as needed;

  • Performs related job duties as assigned.

What We're Looking For:

  • High school graduate or equivalent, preferred;

  • Must possess a valid driver's license;

  • Must have valid commercial driver's license (CDL)

  • Required to submit to and pass a drug test as a condition of employment;

  • Must be able to lift 50 pounds;

  • Ability to perform physical activities such as lifting, dragging, stooping, standing and walking for long periods of time;

  • Must be able to endure exposure to inclement weather;

  • Must have ability to read, write, and communicate clearly;

  • Ability to follow directions and work as part of a team.

  • Ability to rotate shifts, when necessary.

Working Conditions:

This role performs work in extreme (hot or cold) temperatures, small/tight spaces or other uncomfortable situations.

Operations may require this role to be available after hours (on-call) and/or work rotating shifts, evenings and weekends, or irregular hours.

Benefits of Employment with the State of Indiana:

This is an Intermittent position, the position does not offer benefits and is limited to 180 working days in an eleven (11) month continuous period.

About the Job The stockroom clerk is responsible for efficient operation of stocking, disbursing and controlling of goods and supplies. A Day in the Life The essential functions of this role are as follows: * Supervises and assists in unloading and receiving supplies from vendors; * Ensures that all items received are checked against a shipping list and stamp dated when received; * Contacts vendors or Department of Administration regarding partial shipments and/or misorders; * Oversees filling of agency requisitions with supplies from storage; * Oversees assembly of or assembles equipment received in "knocked down" condition; * Maintains detailed inventory records and records of items ordered; * Ensures proper storage procedures and rotation of stock for perishable items; * Makes recommendations on the purchase of new supplies or equipment for warehouse; * Performs all work of lower-level clerks assigned to storeroom, as needed; * Trains and monitors all activities of lower-level clerks; * Prepares daily work schedules and assigns duties to warehouse staff to maximize manpower utilization; The job description is not designed to cover or contain a comprehensive listing of activities, duties or responsibilities that are required of the employee. What We're Looking For * Thorough knowledge of requisitioning and disbursing procedures, consumption rates of stored items and inventory control procedures; * Thorough knowledge of stock items, their locations and the proper methods of storing a variety of goods and supplies based upon efficient space utilization and a variety of state and federal regulations; * Practical knowledge of state regulations in handling and storing foodstuff and perishables; * Ability to distribute work and assign tasks to warehouse staff; * Ability to train staff in proper operation of all equipment and proper methods of storage; * Ability to maintain detailed, accurate inventory records and purchasing records; * Ability to operate forklift, hand truck and other mechanical equipment in warehouse; * Effectively communicate, both orally and in writing. * High school graduate or equivalent. * Must have valid driver's license. Incumbent routinely works with sub district and shop personnel (i.e. HMA, inventory administrator, and central office inventory managers) and other INDOT employees to determine automotive parts and supply needs. Incumbent issues items and accurately updates the MCMS system. This position is typically filled at a salary of $24,128.00 annually.
