Position Description

At Anoka County Highway Department, it is our vision to enhance and protect life by providing safe roads and eliminating traffic congestion. The department has an immediate opening for Seasonal Traffic Engineering Assistant (Intern)who will perform various duties. Some of the critical responsibilities of this position include Installing traffic video recorders and accumulative traffic counters at various locations within the Anoka County Highway system.

This is a seasonal, non-exempt, on-site position. Interviews will take place on Monday, July 1st for those selected to move forward in the hiring process.

Work Location

  • This position will work at the Anoa County Highway building located at 1440 Bunker Lake Blvd NW, Andover MN 55304.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

These examples are not all-inclusive and are intended to be illustrative of the primary responsibilities of an Anoka County Seasonal Traffic Engineering Assistant.

  • Install traffic video recorders and accumulative traffic counters at various locations within the Anoka County Highway system.

  • Collect, record, and assist in compiling data obtained from the video recorders and accumulative traffic counters.

  • Assist in preparing traffic count reports, traffic signal warrant analysis, maps, and graphics.

  • Assist with preparing and reviewing traffic control layouts.

  • Assist with reviewing plats and development submittals.

  • Assist with field work related to permanent signing and striping.

  • Assist with review and field inspection of permits.

  • Assist with various tasks related to traffic signal timing and coordination.

Qualifications and Requirements:

Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Needed

  • High school diploma or equivalent education.

  • Must be at least 17 years of age by time of hire.

  • Currently enrolled in a civil technology, construction management, or civil engineering degree program or related field.

  • Must have a valid driver's license.

  • Ability to lift 50 pounds, with or without accommodation.

  • Successfully pass criminal history and driver's license background check.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Needed

  • Attention to detail.

  • Read and interpret maps and pinpoint specific locations on the Anoka County Highway system.

  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite.

  • Experience with CADD programs.

Physical Demands and Work Conditions

  • Standard office environment, various county work sites both indoor and outdoor, including unfinished structures, construction sites, rough terrain, and changing weather conditions depending on assignment.

  • Vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust focus, such as to work on computers. Ability to see colors, shades and brightness.

  • Hearing abilities required for general and phone communication, signals, and machine sounds.

  • Ability to detect, discern, and tolerate a wide range of scents required for safety and performance of essential duties.

  • Cognitive abilities required include problem solving, prioritization of tasks, short- and long-term memory, interpreting and understanding written documents, and general mathematical skills.

  • Assignments require several hours of varied physical activity in addition to viewing a computer screen, sitting at a desk, or walking/standing.

  • Physical activity may include repeated bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, walking on sloped or uneven terrain, and handling/carrying equipment.

  • Regular lifting of 0-25 lbs., occasional lifting of up to 75 lbs.

  • Equipment used includes computers, phones, and standard office equipment in addition to various inspection and surveying equipment depending on assignment.

  • Inspection and surveying equipment may include but is not limited to digital camera, tape measure, hammer, chisels, boom truck and other machinery, electronic drafting equipment, material testing equipment, power and hand tools, and personal protective equipment.

  • Travel between work sites may require driving a county vehicle and/or a personal vehicle.

  • Exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, fumes, airborne particles, prolonged vibration from machinery, and other hazards is possible while performing essential duties.
