Seasonal Sign Technician

Sign Technicians maintain and improve the traffic signs for the roads on which we drive. Their hard work is an essential asset while getting roadway projects completed safely and efficiently. Seasonal Sign Technicians have the opportunity to enhance their knowledge and skill set in the transportation system with Anoka County.

EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY):These examples are not all inclusive and are intended to be illustrative of primary responsibilities of a Seasonal Sign Technician.

  • Assist with the process of painting roadway messages (crosswalks, stop bars, arrows and other messages).

  • Assist in the set-up and removal of work zone traffic control for message painting operations.

  • Perform flagging duties for message painting operations.

  • Assist with the installation of traffic signs and detours throughout the County Highway system.

  • Assist with the fabrication of signs and other traffic control devices.

  • Perform routine facility/equipment maintenance such as shop/yard cleanup, washing trucks and other large equipment.

REQUIREMENTS:Requirements

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.

  • Must have a valid driver's license.

  • Ability to lift 50 pounds, with or without accommodation.

  • Successfully pass criminal history and driver's license background check.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Work Environment

Ability to:

  • Perform physical duties.

  • Read and understand traffic control manuals.

  • Set-up lane closures with direction.

Work Environment:

  • Work is completed in an outdoor environment in all weather conditions.

  • Safety vest, boots, hard-hat and cap will be provided by Anoka County.

GRADE LEVEL:Salary

$12.00 - $14.00 per hour.

Hours

Full-time; 40 hours per pay week.

Work schedule is primarily Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Schedule may vary based on business needs and at supervisor discretion. Overtime may be required on an occasional basis.

Selection Process

The examination/selection process for this classification will consist of a review of your training and experience from the application materials submitted. The most qualified candidates will be invited for an oral exam or interview.

SIGN TECHNICIAN I Sign Technicians maintain and improve the traffic signs for the roads on which we drive. Their hard work is an essential asset into getting roadway projects completed safely and efficiently. While provided with a new and different work environment each day, Sign Technicians also enjoy a good work-life balance through Anoka County. Bring your skills to this role to help support public safety in the Anoka County Transportation System to ensure efficiency and dependability. This full-time, benefit-eligible position is located at the Anoka County Highway Department. This position is part of the International Union of Operation Engineers Local 49. EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY):These examples are not all inclusive and are intended to be illustrative of primary responsibilities of an Anoka County Sign Technician I. * Install and maintain permanent and temporary traffic signs and barricades. * Install and maintain pavement markings and pavement messages utilizing traffic paints, glass beads, and durable/thermoplastic materials. * Install and maintain work zone traffic control schemes for routine maintenance activities and special projects. * Operate walk behind grinder for pavement marking removal operations. * Fabricate permanent and temporary traffic signs, barricades and other traffic control devices. * Operate signing and message painting vehicles and equipment. * Complete and maintain work accomplishment records and traffic control maintenance activities utilizing a personal computer in accordance with departmental and legal standards. * Assist with year-end inventory and road charge-outs. * Perform maintenance, fabrication and cleaning of signing/striping equipment and work areas. * Operate snow plow vehicles for emergency snow and ice control operations. REQUIREMENTS:Minimum Qualifications * High school diploma or G.E.D. * Must currently possess, or have the ability to obtain within six months, a valid Minnesota Class A Commercial driver's license with air brake and tanker endorsement. * Must be available on a 24-hour emergency call-out basis for emergency operations. * Successfully pass criminal history and driver's license background checks. Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Work Environment Knowledge of: * Use of basic hand tools. * Basic maintenance of small engines and vehicles. * Microsoft programs, including: Windows, Access, and Excel. Skill in: * Written and oral communication. * Interacting with the public in a professional manner. Ability to: * Work in and around traffic in a safe manner. * Follow rules, regulations and safe practices in the performance of required duties. * Effectively lead seasonal workers. * Perform basic operations behind the striper. * Complete pre- and post-trip vehicle inspections. Work Environment * Work is primarily completed outdoors in all weather conditions. * Majority of work may be completed in high-volume traffic areas. GRADE LEVEL:Salary Anoka County Salary Schedule, Grade B009 Normal hiring range: $37,377- $38,688 ($17.97 - $18.60 per hour). 2019 full salary range: $36,296 to $55,265 ($17.45 to $26.57 per hour). Career potential up to $66,081 ($31.77 per hour). After successful completion of an initial hire probationary period, eligible for an initial hire probationary period increase.
