Overview

The City of Chesterfield is accepting applications for the position of Sports and Wellness Internship.

Responsibilities

Position Summary

The Sports and Wellness Intern reports to the Superintendent of Sports and Wellness, and will assist with recreation programs and special events (development, marketing, supervision and implementation); CVAC operations (supervision of CVAC, concessions, scheduling of leagues); Maintenance Operations (repair of park equipment, field set up and event set up, tools and supplies, and athletic field maintenance); Other subordinate staff may include independent contractors.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assists in the planning, development, marketing and implementation of a variety of sports and wellness programs and events;

  • Supervision of Chesterfield Valley Athletic Complex on weekdays, weeknights and weekends;

  • Assists in concessions operations for the Chesterfield Valley Athletic Complex;

  • Assists in qualifying and securing future sponsorships;

  • Assists in seeking and securing future tournaments;

  • Assist with summer camp;

  • Performs a wide range of duties associated with the maintenance and operation of an athletic facility;

  • Assists in the monitoring of sports and wellness program independent contractors;

  • Assists in the monitoring of contract compliance to performance and quality standards using onsite visits, staff reports and other assessment methods;

  • Assists in the gathering and distribution of data including usage hours and surveys;

  • Assists in the evaluation and correction of contractor performance and recommends contract renewals, cancellations or modifications;

  • Works with Recreation Specialist to analyze pricing/expense strategies for program services;

  • Assists in the establishment and evaluation of long-range goals, objectives, regulations, and procedures;

  • Assists in the direction, supervision, and evaluation of programs;

  • Prepares special reports, analyses, and presentations;

  • Assists in the preparation of specifications for bid and contract documents;

  • Although not a direct supervisor, will provide occasional supervision of staff;

  • Assists with the preparation of documents for third party contracts;

  • Assists in the preparation of grant/award applications and completes required reports;

  • Assists in the maintenance and repair of park equipment, tools, and supplies;

  • Assists in turf maintenance programs for a high quality sports complex;

  • Assists during special events;

  • Assists other divisions and departments as needed;

  • Assists in maintenance of tools, equipment and facilities;

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Skill Requirements

Knowledge

Knowledge of principles and practices associated with sports and recreation management, recreation and special event programming, marketing, maintenance and operations of parks and recreation facilities, contract management, grounds and facility management, and budget/financial management, and computer registration system.

Must be able to adeptly handle multiple priorities, problems, and demanding situations; possess strong written and oral communication skills; be able to look toward the future, while dealing with the demands of the present; possess strong planning and organizational skills; be knowledgeable of current trends, resources, legislation, and funding sources; be creative and proactive, yet politically sensitive; possess a strong customer service orientation; and be able to work independently as well in a team atmosphere.

Abilities

Ability to work indoors and outdoors with long and varied hours such as days, nights, weekends and holidays. Must be able to bend, kneel, stoop, reach and lift. Must be able to stand for extended periods of time and sit at a desk up to fifty percent of the day in a busy, close office environment where noise and interruptions prevail. May be required to move tables, chairs, cabinets, equipment, supplies, etc. to maximum of 50 pounds. Must be able to work with potentially dangerous chemicals and equipment. Requires alertness, precision, memory, concentration, judgement, reasoning, patience, problem solving, and imagination. Must be quality minded, safety conscious, people and service oriented, a team player and self-starter.

Minimum Education, Certification and Experience

High school diploma or equivalent required with substantial course work from an accredited college or university towards a Bachelor's Degree in Sports Management, Public Administration, Parks and Recreation Administration, Facility Management, or a closely related field. Must have a valid drivers license and a safe driving record. CPR and AED Certifications are desired.

Compensation

This position is part-time/seasonal and the hourly rate of pay is $13.00/hour.
