Seasonal Grounds Keeper - Historic Nauvoo, IL

This is a full-time, seasonal grounds position in areas of the United States where the summer growing season is April - September. Under limited supervision, performs grounds keeping work and maintains and cares for assigned landscaped areas. Duties include but are not limited to, cultivating and fertilizing lawns, plants, shrubs and trees; preparing soil for sowing seeds, watering turf and ornamental ground covers, spraying and reseeding turf. Operates grounds keeping equipment such as riding lawn mowers, power edgers, power mowers and other related equipment. Sweeps and maintains sidewalks, driveways, building entrances and other assigned areas.

This is a seasonal position with a 40-hour work week intended to last no longer than 6 months.

Housing is not available. If relocating to the area, lodging must be acquired by the applicant.

Typically requires one to two years of grounds keeping experience and may require horticultural training. Valid drivers license required.

Preferred:

• Must be 16 years of age or older.

• Must have a valid driver's license at the time of hire.

• Prior grounds keeping or landscaping experience preferred.

• Must be capable of understanding instructions both verbally and in writing, and able to listen and ask clarifying questions as needed.

• Ability to work well independently, as well as part of a team.

• Ability to take direction and complete assigned tasks with minimal direct supervision.

• Moderate to high levels of attention to detail.

• Must be able to physically perform the required work, which includes lifting up to 50 lbs, pushing carts of loaded material, bending, crawling, and/or reaching.

• Work in all weather conditions including extreme heat and humidity.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

• Care for established lawns and or grounds areas by mowing, trimming, and/or edging around flower beds, walks, walls, and parking lots.

• Prune or trim trees, shrubs, hedges.

• Plant seeds, bulbs, flowering plants, grass, ground covers, trees, or shrubs and apply mulch for protection.

• Rake, mulch, and compost leaves.

• Maintain tools, equipment, or structures using hand and power tools.

• Gather and remove litter.

• Use hand tools, such as: shovels, rakes, pruning saws, saws, hedge or brush trimmers.

• Maintain good relations with the public, missionaries, and fellow employees.

• Proactively report problems to supervisor and propose possible solutions.

• See that all sites and assigned areas are properly maintained to reflect Church standards and image.
