The Illinois Department of Transportation is seeking to hire Seasonal Engineering Interns for the summer of 2024. The Seasonal Engineering Intern Program is designed to give engineering students an opportunity to obtain on-the-job training from May 15, 2024, through August 15, 2024.

Job Responsibilities

Under immediate supervision, this position is accountable for assisting in the testing and/or inspection of hot-mix asphalt and portland cement concrete pavements as well as analysis of pavement designs and rehabilitation.

This position reports to the Bureau Chief of Research. There are no subordinates reporting to this position.

This position operates in an environment that teaches methods of quality testing according to prescribed standards under the immediate supervision of a civil engineer or engineering technician. The result of the work in this position will be the correlation of field performance and design data, recommendations for solving technical problems arising in a job environment, and timely analysis of pavement distress surveys. On a project basis, this position receives guidance from supervising staff.

The challenge for the incumbent in this position is to perform all testing accurately, safely, and efficiently according to prescribed standards and to expand knowledge in pavement designs and rehabilitation treatments.

Job Responsibilities Continued

This position assists with entering contract plan data for mechanistic pavement monitoring, conducting and analyzing pavement distress surveys, testing and evaluating in-place materials which exhibit performance problems, and completing other duties as assigned.

The incumbent performs his/her accountabilities under immediate supervision. This position is constrained by applicable departmental guidelines.

The incumbent's primary internal contacts are within the Bureau of Research. Externally, the incumbent may have occasional contacts with contractors, industry representatives, and the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA). The incumbent may be required to travel statewide; however, no overnight stays will be required.

The effectiveness of this position will be measured by the incumbent's ability to provide, coordinate, and efficiently recommend solutions to technical problems arising in a job environment.

Principal Accountabilities

1.Assists with entering contract plan data for mechanistic pavement monitoring.

2.Assists with pavement distress surveys.

3.Assists with testing and evaluating in-place materials which exhibit performance problems.

4.Performs duties in compliance with departmental safety rules. Performs all duties in a manner conducive to the fair and equitable treatment of all employees.

5.Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Position Requirements

  • Completion of high school or a GED

  • Current enrollment in a college engineering program

  • Valid driver's license

  • Occasional statewide travel

  • ANSI Class 75, 6-inch or higher, steel toe safety shoes

Position Desirables

  • Ability to maintain cooperative relationships with departmental staff

  • Strong oral and written communication skills

  • Working knowledge of spreadsheet, database, and word processing software
