Please tell us why you are interested in the Traffic Technician position and what skills or experience you would like to gain while working at MDT? Please limit your response to one page. As a Traffic Technician for MDT, you'll travel extensively within an assigned region of the state setting out pneumatic road tube traffic counters. Work shifts may vary and can be more than eight hours. A typical workday begins while most people are still sleeping so early birds, pay heed! But, if you're self-motivated and manage your time well, you can usually end your week early on Friday, and who doesn't love a long weekend? Typically, 40-hour work weeks will be offered but not guaranteed. Overtime or compensatory time may be available. Anticipated start date for the successful candidate would be the first week of May 2020. The start date can be negotiated. Duties of Position Include: * Work independently but with guidance and mentoring from a senior Traffic Technician based in the eastern region of the state. * Independently travel to pre-determined traffic monitoring sites and install vehicle detectors on roadway surface or roadside structures based on established specifications. * Operate solid-state micro-processing traffic recorders and video equipment to monitor and collect traffic volumes, vehicle types, vehicle speeds, and any other information pertaining to vehicle travel or use of highway facilities. * Maintain assigned state vehicle by performing daily vehicle safety checks and ensuring it is serviced following MDT's preventative maintenance schedule. * Work safely on and near high volume, high speed traffic. * Retrieve count files from equipment and transfer the data to the Helena office for review and uploading. * Prepare required work-related reports using Microsoft Office programs and traffic counting equipment software reporting modules. Physical aspects of the job include: Stooping, bending, lifting up to 30 pounds, and sitting or standing for extended periods of time. Driver's record will be verified. Successful applicants will be required to sign a release form which authorizes the Department to obtain the applicant's permanent driving records. Compliance with Mont. Admin. R. 2.6.201, "State Vehicle Use," and MDT Policy # 6.03.001, "Addendum to Risk Management and Tort Defense Division State Vehicle Use Policy" are conditions of employment.
